Word For The Day, Wednesday, 8/31/11
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sequacious; adj.
following with smooth or logical regularity. 2. Archaic . following, imitating, or serving another person, especially unreasoningly <1. Conformist, following others in thought and behavior rather than leading. 2. Following a logically consistent direction, as a sequacious argument or line of reasoning. Sequacious is both lovelier and more descriptive than conformist, making it the perfect substitute, "The tattoo trade thrives on a sequacious youth trying to be iconoclastic." Don't forget that this word also refers to consistency in thought and behavior: "Trying to diet over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays doesn't strike me as completely sequacious."
Etymology: Today's word comes from Latin, as do so many English words. This one is based on the Latin sequax (sequac-s) "following, pursuing", the present participle of sequi "to follow". In Sanskrit, the ancient ancestor of Hindi and a language related to Latin and English, it became sak- "to follow" and sakis "friend". The original root also took on the suffix -ondo- (sekw-ondo-), becoming secundus "following, coming next, second" in Latin, whence English borrowed it for our word second.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
I pretty much loathed McCain, and still do. I pretty much prefer everyone running this time to him.
I did vote for Sarah and the old dude in November 08.
I voted for them too because I always vote for the most conservative candidate, regardless of party affiliation. Why the party didn’t learn the lesson with Dole, I’ll never know.
No one learned the true lesson of Bob Dole.
Do not annoint a candidate that alienates conservatives. That is a guaranteed way to lose.
GOP turn out is way more inconsistent than Dem turn out.
But don’t forget it is voters who determine who our candidate will be, not the RNC. At this time last election cycle, Rudy was the frontrunner - McCain was just a tail end candidate that we didn’t even consider worthy of discussion. It was idiots in primary states that caused the collapse of our hopes for someone like Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson - you may have meant that in your post but some people do think the RNC decides on the final candidate.
Hunter would have been good. I liked Fred but hate that he’s shilling for reverse mortgages now. How much money do people need? It’s pathetic.
Oh nothing beats Jimmy Johnson shilling for Extends! lol
True! We should keep track of the most ridiculous ads people have done.
I just noticed how you signed in to post the thread. ROR!
Thanks for pointing that out! I didn’t notice either... XS is a comedian today!
Thanks.
Congratulations on the newest seeker of Truth! Having the grands close in age will help them to stay close growing up.
Mr member is pretty perpetually slack these days! ; )
Speaking of slackers the soother isn’t on today’s attendance sheet.....
I’m a little slow getting out of bed today. I’m travelling later tonight south of the equator.
Try to steer clear of parasites and bacteria this go-round!
Idiot independent voters in open primary states, mostly.
Will try.
Was that really Romney calling Perry a “career politician”?
What has Romney done since, oh about 2006, except try to run for president?
It was sequacious, loquacious, and outrageous!
Heck most of 2004 and 2005 too. He spent most of the second half of his one term out of the state.
Romney would have been a career politician but he couldn’t beat Ted Kennedy back in 1994.
Heck he’s the son of a governor and former presidential candidate himself.
Mind boggling.
