Word For The Day, Monday, 8/29/11
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
ambagious;adj
Circuitous, rambling, garbled, misleading. "Myna Bird gave such an ambagious speech at the conference that no one could think of a question to ask her when it concluded." Unlike ambiguous, which refers to vagueness and multiple interpretations, ambagious refers to twisting and winding in speech: "I think that anyone willing to navigate the ambagious language of the document could find a useful insight or two buried in it."
Etymology: The noun underlying today's Good Word is a back-formation from Middle English ambages "equivocation", the feminine singular Latin ambages "evasion, digression". The Latin word came from the same source as ambiguus "ambiguous", a combination of the prefix ambi-, "both, about, around" + agere "to move, drive". Ambi- also appears in ambidextrous, originally "both-right-handed". The root of agere can be found in a plethora of words borrowed from Latin, including agent, act, and agile.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Same as last year — Dennis Dixon or Steel Valley’s own Charlie Batch.
Ben’s an old married man now.
i loved that you did that! A++++
Drama queens...
Oh well then the rape allegations will stop - everyone knows you stop having sex when you get married. ;^)
The miserly old lady’s speech wasn’t so much ambitious, as ambagious - since she never did get around to her point of begging for a threadbare and much used, but free, purse from the second-hand thrift store ......
SHOCKINGLY decent HW from robt. i myself thought that ambitious and ambagious sounded similar. A+++
LMAO@!
How are things in your water logged neighborhood? Do you know how much rain you actually got?
here is your own personalized ping, bc i realize i had forgotten to put you on my ping list. welcome : )
“I” didn’t get a personalized ping. (Robt slumps in chair, sniffs sadly. Looks disconsolate in back of room.)
bc you got the generalized ping everyone else got ya old coot!
The prime example of ambagious language is the Obamacare Bill. They are still trying to figure it out while the witch from San Francisco cackles, “You’ll have to pass it to find out what’s in it, my pretties. Ha, ha, ho, ho, hee, hee, snort.”
I run my errands... and the phone is ringing off the wall when I get back....two job possibilities...hoo-ha! ....took one, supposed to start in October, then I had put in an application last November and they finally call back and want to interview me......it’s only for Sat mornings and fill in...part time, which I wanted, but why work Sats? I am sticking with the first one.
congrats~!
Congratulations!!! How long will the (new) commute be? Good roads getting there through the snow, or will they be un-plowed and tricky?
St Ronnie was changing school districts (HS physics, chemistry, honors chemistry and advanced placement chemistry, etc.) from last school year to this one.
She was very worried for several weeks after she made the decision to split, and had not gotten interviews.... Then got two offers back-to-back in two days within hours after her first meetings.
A+++ excellent illustration!
About an 8 minute commute on well maintained roads, depending on traffic lights......slide down off my hill, then just one twisty hilly thing to mount to get there...I have four studded snow tires, so I am not worried.
For the most part correct. Even the guys are drama queens.
