Setting aside the other issues, there is another reason why employers might not be interested in hiring your kids, and it's not because they're not great kids who would work hard and do well, but sometimes just because the cost of hiring and training a new employee is significant and if you hire someone who's just going to be there for the summer, you already know that you're going to have to hire someone else in a few months to replace the first person when they leave to go back to school.
In other words, from the perspective of some employers, it'll cost them twice as much to hire and train your kids, and at the end of the day they'll still end up with whomever they have to hire to replace your kids when they go back to school. So why not cut out the middle man, save yourself the extra costs, and just hire the person you're going to end up with in the first place.
For an employer who's already running on a slim profit margin, that added hiring expense can effectively mean that it costs the business more to hire your kid, and then hire her or his replacement, than the employer will earn from your kid's hard work (and I do believe that you've raised your kids right and that they earn every penny they work for). Businesses don't usually last long if they run at a net loss, so if the businesses in question have really slim profit margins right now (and a lot do, I think, considering the Obama Depression), they might very well not be willing to hire kids who will just be there for the summer.
Again, please don't take it personally, because I am not trying to attack your kids in the least.

(The phrase "good enough for government work" is not meant as a compliment)

I understand, I have an engineering background, I drive a cement truck now. You do what you have to do......kids need to get off their butts and realize those jobs, good paying jobs, will go to those that will work 12-14 hours a day. This is not 1950....

Send your teenagers to Texas. There are plenty of jobs for them here!
