How do you harvest the pine cones and I have read that meat byproducts other than revenooers are a no-no in a compost pile?

Well, it is more like trench composting, similar to putting a fish under each corn hill.

The pine canes aren't harvested, but the previous year's fallen pine cones are gathered up & piled to age, until fall chipping. Mainly a 'housekeeping' measure.
