We had a "marmalade kitty" once - he was quite the athlete and very curious - but he lost his voice as a kitten. He would open his mouth and try to Meow and nothing ever came out.

It made for some comical episodes. I remember once we hadn't seen him for most of the day and got worried. We went around and opened all the closet doors (where he usually got stuck) and finally I opened my underwear/sock drawer - there he was - he opened his mouth to meow as usual but nothing came out. Must have been in there for 8 hours. :-)
