Family gets $333,000 for 2009 raid in which cops killed dog
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 19, 2011 | David Heinzmann

A federal jury awarded $333,000 to a Chicago family Thursday after Chicago police officers raided its South Side home with guns drawn and shot its dog in a search that found no criminal activity in the apartment.

Teenage brothers Thomas and Darren Russell were in their second-floor apartment in the 9200 block of South Justine Street in February 2009 when officers announced they had a warrant to search both units of the two-flat. Thomas Russell, then 18, opened the door and found officers with their guns drawn, according to the lawsuit. Russell said that he put his hands in the air and asked permission to lock up his 9-year-old black Labrador, Lady, before they entered.

Police refused the request and came into the house, the lawsuit said. When Lady came loping around the corner with her tail wagging, Officer Richard Antonsen shot the dog, according to the suit, which alleged excessive force, false arrest and illegal seizure for taking the dog's life.

And what do the majority of dogs do? Do we know? I spoke my experience and it seems to have ruffled someone’s very controlling feathers.

Our 11-year-old Akita has become hard of hearing, as far as the door is concerned. He knows his job is to bark his head off if anyone shows up and he will suddenly realize someone is there and go into announcing mode. But he is slower than he used to be.

If he recognizes the truck/car/person, he simply lets us get it.

On the other hand, if a deer is moving 50 yards from the house, he is in full-throated defense of his territory.

Old dogs have their own priorities.

As I have already stated, it depends on the personality of the dog. If the dog is this article was not inclined, as a rule, to come to the front door, or only came to the door sometimes, then it would neither be logical or reasonable to expect it to do so in this case.

In any case, it is unfortunate that the cop who shot the dog and the police chief who ordered the raid were not made to pay the full settlement. Perhaps that is what it will take to stop this nonsense.

Do you condemn the officer who not only expressly refused to allow the young man answering the door to secure the dog, but who shot and killed it?

As I have already stated,

And as I continually state - in my experience.

Not sure why that needs to be deliberately ignored but the need to tell me dogs have differently personalities reigns. LOL! If I've had experience with dogs, wouldn't you credit me with I'd know that?

The experience of any person on any subject is, of necessity, finite. You have already been informed of exceptions to that which you assumed to be a “rule”.

The behavior of the dog in this case has not been demonstrated to be abnormal.

The behavior of a man who will not allow a reasonable request, but would kill a friendly dog is beyond abnormal—it is criminal.

Are you serious? Is that what this is all about? Because of my experience somehow it’s I’m siding with the police officer. WOW! Are you always like that - taking one thing and stretching it into what you are thinking?

The kid acted very responsible - more responsible than the cop because the cop should have taken a clue and been wise enough that dogs don’t always take kindly to strangers. So much for your mind reading. Now I see what this was all about with continually ignoring my ‘in my experience’ for surely there was much more behind that. You FAIL big time. Even the kid has more sense than you - your ‘jump to conclusion’ fits in more with the cop.

You have already been informed of exceptions

Excuse me, prideful one - you think YOU are teaching me something? You REALLY need to get down off your high horse. All your blathering on this to CONTROL is manipulation and it's from the pit. Your insecurities are showing with your desire to control with your NEED to hang onto me.

Why are you inventing that argument and assigning it to me?

I did not ignore your statement. I pointed out exceptions to your statement. Using “in my experience” in an argument does not trump exceptions to one’s experience.

I see you have stooped to personal attacks. I regret that you have chosen not to continue in civil discussion.

Have a good night.

To my knowledge, they are planning, approving and conducting similar raids.

After all, they merely received a $3000 slap on the wrist, this time.

I take you questioning me on the police’s conduct as a personal attack.

There is no such thing as civil with one that jumps to conclusion with a need to control like the cop did. You failed here and he failed in court. LEARN!

The jury took care of condmening the police officer’s killing of a harmless pet and they condemned the supervising officer who was responsible for creating the police home invasion on innocent people.

It does not matter what any police brutality excuse maker says. The justice system finally let it be known that cops can’t kill whomever they claim is a “threat” to them. Pets and people.

Every time these obvious cases of excessive force and improper invasion occurs, there should be a trial. Prosecutors are falling down on their jobs to let so many killings go unprosecuted. They are enraging the public and turning too many against all cops. American policing has become wild west “justice” because the rule of law has been undermined by unions and politicans. In the wild west, cops are not safe either.

I regret that you have decided to assume a question concerning your beliefs on a situation was a personal attack.

When I ask a question as to a Freeper’s beliefs, I am asking for that Freeper’s point of view.

Enjoy the remainder of your Friday.

Unless the cop can prove he was mauled, bitten and bleeding, I agree with you...when the money comes out of their pockets, they’ll change...not until then..

Stop the whitewash job your are trying now that your posts show how they align themselves with the cop’s behavior. You are starting to look pathetic as you NEED to keep hanging onto me - so drop it. You have no idea how to let go because of your control issue and you keep proving it.

I’m done with you.

That brings up an interesting possibility. Is this all a Vast Feline Conspiracy to keep the number of canines in check?

Yep, and their priorities are not necessarily in line with their owners priorities.

Otherwise, if your Akita had his way, you would very likely be taking him deer-hunting every time a doe or stag entered your property.

“Master, you can’t mean to let that impudent deer get away with this. Let’s get him!” ;-)

Dogs do get excited over visitors.
I have read that a common tactic to get suspects to talk is to kill the dog and scare them.
A nine year old Lab usually has hip problems and not moving too quickly anymore.
