I think its instinctive in each species...wolves have packs and cats with the exception of lions, are solitary species. Other than wolves canines are solitary also..fox, coyote etc. Which leads me to believe dogs come from wolf and not the other types of canines..

I did read the funniest thing the other day on the internet. A guy was suggested (and seemed to really believe) that the different breeds of dogs came from wolves INTERBREEDING with DIFFERENT species! He was dead serious, apparently. I mean, he thought smaller breeds came from wolves breeding with things like badgers or things like that. I started say something and then I thought...no, just go on about my business...
