Best (and Worst) Drum Magazine for AR/M4gery?
me | 8/17/2011 | Titan Magroyne

Looking for recommendations regarding drum style ammo mags. Equally interested in which ones to avoid over feeding issues.

Are there performance differences between snail mags and betas? No experience in this regard, so any help is appreciated.

I prefer a magazine type that I can load and store with the spring relaxed, if possible, only tightening when the job is at hand.

FR shooters, help! LOL

The weapon is a Bushmaster M4gery carbine.

I want one of those 30 round monsters or maybe one of those 90-round mega monsters.

Anyone have any experience with those two form-factors?

I hear the best brand is ObamaMags, but you’ve gotta carry them into Mexico within 7 days.

Any mag must be stored either full or empty.

Any full mag stored for defense should never be used
for practice accept for a few times to check it's reliability.

Springs in any Mag will not wear out over time by being stored full.
Only Mags used for practice will wear out.

I hope you wear out alot of mags.

Oh shoot! Yeah, I forgot about the new fat mags. Seems like it would be a bear to shove in the last few dozen, at least!

Right, if anybody has tried one out, I’m interested in that story too.

LOL

Looks like the ATF and DEA have reserved the monopoly on ObamaMags.

Thank you. Going by what you posted, only springs in shooting mags wear out, not ones kept compressed in storage? That sounds counter-intuitive to me.

Cannot afford to wear many out. The care and feeding of guns can be expensive!

I’ve never tried one personally, but I’ve always heard and read good things about the 100 round Beta Mags. They’re a bit pricy though. I have a 90 round drum, but all of the rounds are on one side, causing it to be off balance. The Beta drum mags put 50rnds on either side, and don’t have that problem. They do add a good bit of weight though.

I think I prefer the good ol’ tried and true 30 round GI Mags. Inexpensive, plentiful, reliable, and they don’t weigh down the rifle.

I didn't have a drum. I had a 50 rd mag for my Colt carbine. I don't think I ever used it though. I mostly used the little mag that came with it.

It kinda looked like this newer model Colt but with the older sliding stock. I got that 50 rd mag just because it looked cool on the carbine.

Check out the new surefire mags. I haven’t personally, but surefire is a solid company.

Did you catch the Sons of Guns show with the twin M-16’s mounted with 100 round drums? They had to add a water cooling system because the barrel got up over 700 degrees!

Many thanks for your personal input. On balance alone, the beta sounds better. Especially as a female, I would have more issues with with that.

That looks sick. In a good way, ya unnderstan’.

You familiar with the new hi-cap stick mags? I think they come in capacities of 90 or 120 rnds, your choice.

Thanks. I wasn’t interested in drums until recently, so I’ve paid no mind to the various brands. Surefire’s other products have been good.

That show was killer! The barrel really was glowing red.

Did you see them make the “trimese” on Red Jacket’s 10th anniversary show? Just nuts!

I’d love a crack at the suppressed Saiga 12 and the integrally suppressed AK. I wish he’d do a bullpup version of the S12, for the sake of those (OK, *me*) who’d like a HDW size of the Saiga without having to NFA the thing and register it with the local LEOs.

Not that I could buy it, but I wish he’d do the build anyway.

The Beta-C (dual drum) mag is the best there is, but it’s got problems for anybody but the casual shooter.

The tend to jam a bit, especially under extremely fast rates of fire.
They’re made of polymer, which is normally OK. However, drop a fully loaded $200 Beta-C and it will disintegrate.

For the money, you can get a buttload of good aluminum (CProducts) or polymer (MagPul) mags.

I agree with some of this, but ALL of my self defense mags are a) numbered and b) used constantly. A mag may not show a failure (usually in the feed lip geometry) after one or even five cycles, but continuous use will determine if the mag has any issues.

Once I determine a mag has issues, I mark it in red paint and use it for training. I like to experiences stoppages and work through the problem in a tactical manner. I’m surprised at the number of AR shooters who constantly treat any malfunciton as a purely technical matter, and stop everything (including situational awareness) to diagnose something like a FTF. They never practice failure drills. I’m somewhat guilty of this, but I’m learning.
