August 1 marks the 30th Anniversary of MTV. MTV revolutionized the way we looked at music and the VJs were a big part of shaping that vision. We want to know what it meant to you. Do you have fond memories of watching MTV or your favorite VJ?

We’ll collect your stories through the month of August and post them here on the site as we get them.

We will be accepting form entries starting Saturday, July 30th, 2011.

There’s a local bar band called “The Reagan Years”.

Why am I suddenly having Max Headroom flashbacks?!?

Graham Bonnet! Who’s cooler than he? Shades, awesome voice, and that little gesture of touching his index finger to his forehead just before singing — he’s the man!

wish somebody would bring back the old “Night Flight” program

"Night Flight" was awesome! It introduced me to Kate Bush when it aired "Live at Hammersmith Odeon. I really miss that show. And "The Midnight Special." And "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert."

And of course who could forget, The Dead Milkmen:

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us to a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said he don’t work here
We said if you don’t got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin

USA’s Night Flight was great. I remember seeing my first Iron Maiden video (Flight Of Icarus) on that show. I also liked USA’s Up All Night.

I dunno.

Did you crack your head on a parking deck bar?

;]

Then there was “Oddities” with the inimitable “The Maxx” series.

Watched ‘em all.

Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is still haunting.

Sheesh...I’m about to go on a nostalgia crying jag, here...:)

Did anybody see the ABC *prime time* showing of “Alice Cooper; The Nightmare”?

My 13 year old world changed forever.

The VHS of that is *still* one of my most cherished possessions.

MTV used to be cool as hell when it first started. Just one music video after another. No commercials or shows -- just "VJs" who would introduce the songs and maybe chat a little about the bands, just like the DJs on the radio. We would turn it on during parties and let it run all night. Cool as hell. But you couldn't pay me to watch it now.

Trivia question: What product was advertised in the first commercial to air on MTV?

Answer: Bubble Yum.

If I had to say, which video I associate the most with early MTV, it would be this one:

Who Can it Be Now? - Men at Work
