North Carolina fired football coach Butch Davis on Wednesday, saying the past year of turmoil amid an NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct was doing too much damage to the school's reputation.
The school issued a statement announcing Davis' dismissal nine days before the start of preseason practice. Chancellor Holden Thorp said the decision was not prompted by any changes in the ongoing NCAA investigation but said he "lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution."

Whoa. Timing could not be worse for the Heels. Who’s got the skinny on this?
should have been done last year, or before
I have no idea why anyone ever thought this guy was an SEC caliber coach.
NC is not an SEC school.
He wasn’t SEC caliber. He was ACC caliber
Not bad for someone who gets fired, huh?
That’s what he gets for putting 15 players on the field against my Volunteers.
don-o,
Rumor has it the folks in “rocky top” would like to hang Lane Kiffen??
Gooooo Gators Beat Tenn.
Just saying.
He wasn't an SEC - "Seek Easy Competition" coach but rather an ACC - "All Cup Cake" league coach.
Go Buckeyes!
Schools that recruit the thug element win but at the same time the leaders at some of those schools do not want to tolerate the stain on the reputations. OSU knows all about thugs as does NC, SC, Auburn, USC, and many others.
It has everything to do with letting blacks get away with being who they are-screw the white man(system). Ask Reggie Bush.
Actually there were white people (agents) involved in the situation at UNC. Also a black assistant coach who had formerly been at my own school.
Yes, the thug element is color blind. Look at Steve Garcia at SC. At a school like Notre Dame or Rice he would have been out on the street. The other day his QB coach was arrested for public urination at a coaches clinic. The whole system is crazy.
ACC does a better job in the b-ball area. Even the Big East will be getting next year TCU.
Surprised this took place just over a month before the start of the college football season. Guess getting house cleaning done before day one.
