Our furnace has quit and a major decision has to be made. We have a gas (propane) furnace that has lasted 15 years. The outside cooling unit would still work IF the furnace fan system was working.
The furnace people have recommended Carrier. They also carry Trane. Does anybody have recent experience with the duel system with gas and heat pump?
This will be a major expense, more than 15,000.00 so anybody with knowledge to help guide me to the best decision of a bad deal would be appreciated.
Central Services heating engineers may be able to help!

We live in Dallas Texas. We recently replaced a very old 2 ton air conditioner that was not cooling at all, yet was constantly running, with a brand new 3 ton air conditioner(Rheem) with a new furnace, with two new vents in the living room PLUS a new water heater; They replaced EVERYTHING for almost 6,000 dollars.
Yes; this is the most expensive investment in our house we’ve made, yet it was time to do so, especially considering the heat wave we’ve all been experienceing. Despite the heat outside..it’s great inside the house!
We contacted HOME DEPOT, they contract with the BEST companies around, to get the job done right. I think we did the right thing..spending $6,000 dollars is MUCH better than having to spend 15,000 dollars. You may wish to call HOME DEPOT, to see what kind of deal they can offer you to replace your A/C and Furnace units..I think you might be able to get a better deal from them, at least; the cost probably would be less than spending $15,000!
FRiend, you are being taken for a ride. Unless your furnace has been reduced to a pile of slag, you need nothing more than a fan and starting capacitor, they should throw in a new thermocouple for free. Total cost installed should not be more than a few hundred bucks, and you could do it yourself for much less......goodluck.
We had a 95% eff. York furnace and heat pump installed last year. The system works great. The reason we purchased a heat pump is that the area we live in Ohio offers lower winter electric rates such that running the heat pump is cheaper than using natural gas. Otherwise, the heat pump would not work economically.
The heat pump heats at temperatures greater than 35 degrees.
What is the sq footage of your house?
Bid is for a “carrier 3 speed gas furnace, model 58MVC080-F-1-20, 21 wide btu range 74/49/29/ cfm range 525-1470, & 5 ton inverter heat pump.” The bid also has “infinity thermostat control, pad for condenser unit, air purifier 2 filters 2000 cfm, duct cleaning, drain pvc, permit fee, breaker change out, reconnect charges, etc.” So a lot of details for disconnect, taking old units, and connecting new units.
I’m assuming if you looked on your bill/bid these items would also be included.
What model # was your Carrier?
I had a 5 ton Carrier with AC installed for 5.5K.
Your installer is hosing you.
Cheers,

What is the sq footage of your house? Our quote is for a 5 ton, maybe not needed.
I paid 17K last summer, there were some unique installation factors, we got Trane, will never again buy Carrier due to premature failure of a past Carrier unit
Our price included permits, removal and haulaway of the old equipment, etc, landfill fee alone for the old equipment was couple hundred bucks
If you get several estimates you’ll know if $15K is par for your area, it helps if you know anyone who has a good experience with a good honest HVAC company
Do look up tax credits from the feds and your state (even local govt might have some as everyone had stimulus money to give away
What a site!! I will take me days to go through the pages posted. But, good information on lots of issues....sure can get confusing.
But, a BIG THANK YOU!
This still puzzles me if it's a normal-sized unit. The local Trane contractor right now is advertising installed heat pump systems for approx. $3600 and up. So double that for normal advertising puffery and it's still less than half yours. Hope there was a good reason for the 17K.
removal and haulaway of the old equipment
Our contractor actually paid us $1,000 for the old equipment.
I can’t stress enough to shop around. I had estimates as high as 15K too. And the guy who installed was no more of an expert than the guy who did it for half as much.
About 1600 sq ft.
I got a new furnace and air three weeks ago. Brand name for both is York" $5130.
My mother, with about the same size house as mine, (Different state) $3100 for both.
