The truth factor associated with that episode was a little shaky, in my opinion. They never actually said that they took a 1,000 yard shot. The long range shot was of an indeterminate distance, thru auto glass, to hit a target. The other part was the questionable use of the 7.62x39 round at long range. Have you looked into the trajectory of 7.62x39 at 1,000 yards? Think slow-pitch softball, or maybe a mortar round. If you mis-judge the range by just a few feet, you will have missed a human-sized target completely. Can you make an AK action lock up well enough for a 1,000 yd shot? Maybe, but you'd better re-chamber it for .308 Rem or .338 Lapua.
Gimmick. Like the triamese AR rig or the water-cooled double M-16 that they got some Navy reservists to prostitute themselves over. I know - Simply doing your job well doesn't sell TV time. But, Hollywood doesn't actually get the job done.

What about a Romak 3 (7.62 x 54R)? It is sometimes called a long-range AK.
