Snowblower accident leaves 15-year-old pitcher frustrated
Chicago Sun Times ^ | 7/23/2011 | Jon Seidel

Kenny McGill loves to be in control, especially on the pitcher’s mound.

That’s where the 15-year-old from Plainfield could take charge for his youth baseball team, the Rangers, and win or lose the game.

“Baseball is, like, my life,” he said.

But these days he’s frustrated, and he’s not sure when he’ll take the mound again. In a frightening snowblower accident in December, Kenny lost part of one finger and the top of another on his right hand — his pitching hand. The physical wounds are healing, but some simple tasks, still challenge him. Opening a can of soda or playing a video game can be a daily reminder of his loss.

Worst of all for a teenager, he feels different. Kenny says he has been picked on since the accident because of the “nub” left behind. He’s enjoying a new summer job in downtown Plainfield, and he likes hanging out with a small group of friends. Being around other kids can be uncomfortable, though.

Yeah, probably the first 15 yr old to do something stupid.

Fair point. It's just that the article tries to make it sound like sticking your hand down the chute of a running snowblower isn't incredibly dumb. It is very, very dumb.

Unlike you, I don’t hate kids and it is too bad people like you can be parents.

Well you can thank the Trojan company that I don't have kids. I've been a responsible non-parent for many years now. In fact, I was absolutely sure of it pretty much all my life, AND my late grandmother, the most solid, most conservative influence in my life, told me herself she thought I shouldn't have kids!

Kids are horrible little vermin. Someone has to have them, I guess. Just glad it isn't me. Did I mention I make my living working with kids? LOL! I know from where I speak.

It’s all in how he reacted to the first joking comment. He should have shoved the nub up the other guys nose.

I & my wife have raised 3 boys.

The oldest works for a bank.

The middle one graduated from the Air Force Academy and is an Officer in the Air Force.

The youngest is a Corporal in the USMC on his second set of 4 years.

I wouldn’t trade the years raising these “vermin” as you put it for anything.

I would bet your hatred towards children is cover for your missing out on life’s greatest and most wonderful adventure - raising sons and daughters.

God help you.

Worst of all for a teenager, he feels different.

That's a sad story but the kid has to either adapt or move on to another sport. He gets no sympathy from me, I was always too small to play the team sports. I was a great little league baseball player but upon entering the Babe Ruth league in my small community, I was forced to play with 18 year olds throwing smoke....that was the end of my baseball career......LOL!.

So I moved on and excelled in the individual sports, high school ski team and swim team...........

For some reason, Jim Abbott comes to mind......

Born, Sept. 19, 1967, in Flint, Michigan without a right hand. He was an All-America hurler at Michigan; won Sullivan Award in 1987; threw 4-0 no-hitter for NY Yankees vs. Cleveland (Sept. 4, 1993).

The oldest works for a bank.

That's not a kid, that's an adult.

The middle one graduated from the Air Force Academy and is an Officer in the Air Force.

Another adult.

The youngest is a Corporal in the USMC on his second set of 4 years.

Yet another adult.

I'm not talking about adults. I'm talking about children.

I wouldn’t trade the years raising these “vermin” as you put it for anything.

And no one is saying you should. Someone's got to do it.

I would bet your hatred towards children is cover for your missing out on life’s greatest and most wonderful adventure - raising sons and daughters.

Not at all. In fact, I wondered if I would ever regret it, but I'm way past the point of having to wonder about that. Definitely made the right decision not having kids. It's not for everybody. Some people just don't want to spend 20 years with selfish little beasts.

PS--You have no sense of humor.
