Bought a farm this year. Already have chickens, turkeys and rabbits. Eggs are just starting to be found in the coop, and the turkeys are already tipping the scales at 4 months at 20 and 26.5 lbs respectively.

Next year we’ll have two pigs to raise for breeding, eating the offspring.

Two milk cows and (for meat) a steer.

I wonder what our carbon footprint will be? Oh wait, no I really don’t. I imagine that our guilt for keeping these animals prisoner as we eat their offspring and by-products is so bad that carbon footprint isn’t our biggest problem./s

This January, when it’s 12 below zero at 6:00 AM some miserable Tuesday morning, maybe you could have somebody from the Environmental Working Group come over and help you with your chores. They’re experts on farming, you know.

We should all come live on your farm. Do you have room for a few thousand Freepers?

Gee, thanks for reminding me that I have 6 bunnies, and a half dozen broilers to butcher this week.

Couple of more weeks, and it’ll be a half dozen fryers to do.

Two-three weeks later, the other 6 “broilers” will be roasters.

I live young rooster to a neighbor who needs a new one, and that’ll leave 4 or 5 layers for the two of us

A couple weeks or so after that, more bunnies for the freezer...and then deer & turkey season.

Two cows sounds like about twice as much twice a day milking than I want to even contemplate, let alone have to do; but pigs is good...REALLY good.

Muscovy ducks and Toulouse geese.... look into them.

They are great foragers and although I haven’t taken any to the table yet, they’re supposed to be great. I presently have 2 mama ducks on nests and in about 1 1/2 weeks, I should have around 30 new ducklings.

Muscovy duck is described as being close to beef and some say venison.... very little fat so they are not greasy and are healthy. I warn you, be carful about name these guys, they are very friendly. So, the ones I intend to butcher get democrat names such as, Reid, Pelosi, Obama......

I have read that just a couple of Muscovies will get rid of 90% of the flies around your barn.

I’m new to this bird thing, but so far it’s easy and I love it.

I don’t like rabbit for eating, but I feed my GSD a 100% raw diet...much of it is meat.... he eats about a half a chicken a day, as well as beef. I’ve been thinking about raising rabbits for him. It looks cheap and easy and I know they breed like the dickens.

As for my carbon footprint, I don’t give a flying flip.

Enjoy your farm...

Bought a farm this year.

Jealous! The one biosphere I always wanted to see practically implemented is thus: dig a deep stock pond, stock with fingerlings, especially catfish.

Start a good chicken flock. Let them free-range pick bugs out of the garden during the day. Harvest catfish, place
the bones/skin/guts at the bases of plants in the garden.

Also feed catfish scraps to chickens.

Start a rabbit farm with the rabbits elevated on 1/4” wire.
Start worm farms under the rabbits and their waste.

Eat the rabbits, give the leftovers to the chickens and catfish. Start new gardens under the rabbit coops as you move the coops around. Feed the rabbits out of the garden.

Eat the chickens. Feed the leftovers to everything else.

Dig the worms to fish for catfish. And so on. It just sounds like a fun thing to try.

“Next year we’ll have two pigs to raise for breeding, eating the offspring.”

You might want to re-think that plan, unless you are going to get more than 10 sows. You will need a boar, and it isn't worth feeding one all year for just a sow or two.

You would be better off buying feeder pigs or a couple bred gilts.
