Pat McCracken, Universal Adjustment Bureau, calls Johnny with the opportunity to solve a case that eluded him six years ago. In that case Bernard "Barney the Bum" Margoul, a strong arm for Big Mike Killian, apparently committed suicide by jumping from New York's Tri-Borough bridge. Killian will receive $300,000 insurance after midnight before March 1 if Barney the Bum isn't found. Pat says that Mamie Prescott, the original witness to the "jump" claims to have seen Barney the Bum in Paris. Pat tells Johnny he will receive $10,000 if he can bring Barney in before March 1. Johnny visits Mamie Prescott and learns that she saw Barney at the antique shop of Francois DuBissant, an underworld fence, in Paris. In the elevator of Prescott's apartment Johnny is beat up by two thugs, Milford and Jimmy, from Killian. Johnny flies to Paris. DuBissant pleads ignorance, but then sends his bodyguard, Maurice, to knock off Louis DeMarsac, AKA Le Chat Gris at his residence at Rue de la Padelamor. Johnny gets to Le Chat Gris' place in time to save him from Maurice. For a promise of $2500 Le Chat Gris produces the bound and gagged Barney from his closet. Johnny calls Randy Singer to get clearance to land the plane bringing Barney back. They arrive in New York 7 minutes after midnight and Johnny thinks all has been in vain until Randy tells him it is leap year. Beaudry recognizes one of the stage passengers claiming to be named "Zimmer" as a man wanted in California for stage hold-ups, Ches Ryan, and he alerts Matt. Matt alerts Berryman, the stage messenger, to the potential of a hold-up. Berryman says that Willow Grove would be the most likely spot for a hold-up. Near Willow Grove a wheel of the stagecoach freezes. When the stage is held up by Ryan's men, Beaudry is enlisted by the bandits. Ryan holds a gun on passenger Gant. He then faces the dilemma of securing his escape, or helping Matt and the other passengers out of a tight spot. Beaudry pulls a gun on Ryan and helps Dillon disarm him. Beaudry expects to be set free. Dillon still plans to bring Beaudry in, dead or alive. He is a marshall, not a judge. Dillon can only promise a fair trial.
