Finding Our Way Out Of The Forest - Faith, Family And Fecundity

While abortion, contraception, divorce, unmarried couples living together, children born out-of-wedlock, the culturally instilled desire for small families and the relentless drive to normalize homosexuality all have an impact, in some cases a pronounced impact, on declining birthrates, they are results not causes.

In the United States, the deconstruction of Judeo-Christian civilization has preceded in stages - from the introduction of oral contraceptives in 1960, to taking prayer out of our public schools in 1963, to the legalization of abortion in 1973, to no-fault divorce in the early 1970s, to the rise of cohabitation, illegitimacy and single-parent families, to the institution of so-called same-sex marriage in the past decade. In many ways, it’s a logical progression from one devastating assault on society’s moral foundation to the next. One overthrown norm is used as a staging area to attack the next.

All true. There’s no way we would be on the verge of nationwide homosexual marriage now without previous events, such as the sexual revolution of the ‘60s, setting the stage for it now.

There’s no way the “baby mama” culture would have taken root the way it has, without the sexual revolution and treating sexual union with many partners, without marriage, as something that young people are expected and encouraged to be involved in.

Speaking of homosexual marriage, I hope that we can retain the concept of monogamy as we go forward towards national homosexual marriage. That event too, if it happens, moves the goal posts, and makes something that was once unthinkable, very much imaginable to someone who wants to push the envelope. Polygamy, group marriage, and adult-child marriages could be the next barriers to fall in the marriage/relationship area.

And the entertainment business has pushed the envelope by being so open. Comedy shows such as Chelsea Lately always seem to have a strong sexual theme, with many penis jokes told. Such shows would have been censored years ago, but, that envelope has been pushed. Numerous other shows with stand up comics on Comedy Central tell sexual jokes all the time. Because it’s basic cable, they bleep out the worst of them. You hear lots of beeps on those shows. They too would have been censored years ago. Now it’s just completely accepted.

On the other hand, there’s no greater comfort than the realization that our lives have meaning – no matter who we are, no matter what we accomplish in this brief span of existence. This gives us the courage to do things that count, including having and raising children.

This is a very powerful point. If you know that every righteous act, no matter how small, has an eternal value, you can't ever suffer from despair or boredom.
