Compare the effects of the original three Star Wars films with that of the new trilogy. The old animatronics/puppets and models are far more realistic than the CG stuff. Those were the films I was thinking of along with 2001. The only thing about Star Wars is space doesn't transmit sound, but they wouldn't be the same otherwise. Forbidden Plant from the mid 1950's was pretty good and even the original Star Trek series considering its budget.
