My Favorite Place to Buy Fireworks
self | July 1, 2011 | PJ-Comix

Yeah, yeah. I know. The place is incredibly tacky. But guess what? The selection of fireworks there is also incredibly AWESOME. South of the Border was like a fireworks magnet for me when I was a kid. My folks liked the place and we enjoyed reading the multitude of Pedro signs on the way there. Plus back then it was about the only place in the eastern USA where you could eat Mexican food. But the big draw for me was the fireworks.

Just saw the flashing traffic signs here in VA telling of checkpoints for drunk driving and fireworks. Not kidding.

Have battles with Roman Candles.

One July 4th night I got caught up in a spontaneous Roman Candle and Bottle Rocket war at a three day Willie Nelson concert, it must have involved thousands, it was incredible and resulted in at least one lost eye.

Didn’t ya just love the green water proof fuses on the old cherry bombs? My brothers and I would tie them to a rock, light em, and toss em in the creek behind our house. When they blew, a huge geyser went up, filled with minnows and tadpoles!

“I haven’t been able to buy Cherry bombs, M-80s for many a year now...”

Ahhh, memories. Many an elementary school commode fell victim to the M-80.

Now I live on the farm and we only set off the small fountain-type fireworks so we don’t scare the critters.

Like I said before, I’d make a day trip to find some, but don’t even know where to go...I would use waxed string to make slow delay fuses....could be miles away before the BOOOM!
(on bike)..*lol*

Boomland on I55 near Sikestown Missouri. Like a Sam’s Club full of fireworks.

Every time I drive down I-95 and see the Holy Sombrero rising above the plains of Dillon County, I get a little misty-eyed thinking about my wonderful 7 1/2 years in South Carolina.

God bless SC, a state where it’s perfectly OK to blow yourself up to your heart’s content every July 4 and New Years Eve.

DP and the boys are going over the line tomorrow to buy fireworks (and cheap gas). One of our neighbors usually puts on a professional level, totally-illegal-in-NC blowout, but he has a daughter starting college this fall and may not have his usual fireworks budget.

I used to get to the Carolinas pretty often and I always stopped there. I never bought fireworks because I was never there the right time of the year, but they do have a great stand. A good old-fashioned tourist trap and a sight to see at night.

People don't believe me but all the toilets were blown up at my high school. The bathroom doors were locked. This was late 60’s early 70’s. The only bathroom that worked was in the gym. The only way this could work was we had 1/2 day classes. We were done at noon and then went home. They would fix the toilets and then they would get bombed. Finally the administration said fine if you don't want toilets you don't get toilets. We didn't even have a cafeteria. I loved it. Went to class and then went home. No wasted time. They had an evening shift that used the same buildings etc. Really saved a lot of money. BTW we had tons of national merits scholars etc. back when the scores meant something.
We had one guy in my senior class that got a perfect score on his SAT. They made him retake it and he did in again.

Here in the Southwest with extreme drought conditions, setting off fireworks is a sure way to start wildfires.

My very favorite was a little shop in Northern Missouri. It was on a “back” road, but since Iowa is a fireworks nanny State they still did plenty of business.

Anyway, this is a family run joint...the owners house is less than 20-30 yards from this large building full of fireworks. The one day that I stopped in there, it appeared no one was there...suddenly someone appeared at the Counter...he had been taking a nap on the floor. In the middle of the store was a table, with a huge ashtray; overflowing with hundreds of butts. Not something often seen in a fireworks shop.

The guy was helping me pick out some good fireworks, and described one as “super-loud...we set them off outside the kids’ windows once in the while if they don’t get up for school.”

Kid you not...loved those people...LOL!
