So I'm back in the market for a hunting rifle for deer / antelope / elk. Would love to be able to afford a $1,000+ rig but that is just not in the works at this time. I've been looking at the Remmington 770 combo in either 30-06 or in .308.

Look around for deals. About 2 years ago, I sold an unfired, new-in-box Browning A-bolt Hunter 30-06 with a cheap scope (Leupold rings) for $650.

I have three (3) M700s of varying ages. I have literally thousands of rounds throgh each of these rifles. My dad, two brothers, and three friends all have M700s, again, with thousands of rounds having been fired through each gun.

Now let ME holler a little to get your attention:

Get a Mosin-Nagant and watch ‘Enemy at the Gates’. @ $100. Then learn to shoot. You can get Russian ammo that says ‘For hunting big animals’. 210 grains or so.

Remington seems to attach a 12 pound lawyer to the trigger.

Once you have used the 60 degree throw of the A-Bolt, It’s hard to go back to the others.

I bought a Rem. 700 in 1960 in 243 cal. and have killed wild goats, pigs, mule deer etc. and to this day have never had any problems with it what so ever. I've used the 70 grain bullet for target and varmints and the 100 gr. for hunting. Even though I love the 243 as a all around rifle, I would go with something bigger than the 3006 for Elk, bear, caribou and moose. Remington gives you tons of choice in calibers.

I have only run ~50 rounds thru mine, so I cannot comment on long-term reliability.

How can you not love ammo that says ‘For hunting big animals’ right on the box. How P-unC is that? Are the primers corrosive?

The 770s I've handled were in a word, “rough.” Very rough.

In comparison to a Mosin-Nagant?

Agree, I have a Ruger 77 Mark II .300 Winchester Magnum. Awesome weapon for the money.

I’ve heard lots of good about Howa. You get pretty much the same metal as a Weatherby since they supply it for the IIRC Vanguard series, but without the ultra-expensive stocks and the extra cash you pay for the Weatherby name. Combos in those calibers can be had in the $700 range.

If you don’t mind single-shot, you can get an H&R for under $400, and they’re pretty accurate and reliable.

Then of course don’t forget to hit the gun shows or used gun shops. You can shave a few hundred off the price of a good bolt-action.

nope. just the regular .223, 52 or 55gr bullets.
I’ve shot a couple thousand rounds through it though, and that’s been the only complaint. cost is about $15 and takes about 5 minutes to fix it.

I have a Savage 110 in .30-06 while each of my sons have Savage 111’s in 7mm-08. All with AccuTriggers. Accuracy is phenomenal. I can’t tell you how much I like that 7mm-08 round. My Dad has hunted with that round in a Browning BLR for years and it is simply a game getter. It just seems the critters are “dead before they hit the ground” with that round more than any other in my experience. Probably too light for elk, tho and unless you load your own, costlier than the .308.

Anyway, I picked up a never fired Ruger M77 in .25-06 last year at auction. I am very impressed with its action. Very robust and clean. You can still get great deals in the used and auction markets if you are patient. Well within your price point.

Don’t Forget...!.. If you consider Savage... gotta get the AccuTrigger!

I own a 30-06 Savage with it and picked up a 22 model with the same trigger. Fun gun and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to shoot unlike the 30-06.

Savage minus the cheap (combo) scope if you can’t afford the Rem 700. Get a decent scope.

i've got an older 110FP and their regular adjustable trigger is fine too. it doesn't adjust down as far and you have to take off the stock to get to it, but it's still really crisp. goes plenty light enough for hunting.

A new Ruger in 30-06 is about $650 near me via http://www.galleryofguns.com

A Savage runs about $720. A Browning A-bolt in .308 would run around $800.

A Remington 770 runs about $300, including a scope.

I’d prefer a Browning myself, but I’m sure a 770 would get the job done.
