To be sure, the Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant was THE rifle for the Russian masses until Stalin died in 1953. They were simple, ugly as original sin, and totally reliable in the hands of the millions of peasants that carried them in combat. The 7.62x54R ammo is cheap and plentiful, but you really have to watch out for the corrosive stuff. Not all Mosin-Nagants have the chromed barrels of late production guns. Some of the Mosins made by former Combloc or non-aligned nations (like Finland) are far superior to the Russian or Soviet copies.

For myself, I find my Winchester M1917, Springfield M1903 Mk I and Springfield M1941 Sniper's (replica) more than enough for bolt-action fun in .30-06. I have found all three to be tack drivers (within the limits of their battle sights or scope). A mansize target does not want to go up against any of them because that target will windup face-down in the dirt. One shot, one kill.
