We know what a CDL is, but what the heck is a CHL?

Canooker Hockey League? I guess if you towed a motor home full of players around, they could beat 'em up at the next stop light...

I have a CDL. Stopped right now off the I-10 in AZ about 30 miles from a morning load of watermelons headed for Sparks, Roseville, Sacramento and San Francisco.

Just unloaded earlier today to a WalMart DC (distribution center) in Casa Grande with a heavy load from an Americold in Salt Lake. Came the Glenn Canyon way, through Page, then Flagstaff AZ. Got THE last parking spot at the Little America in Flagstaff last night. There was a guy parked crooked, made the space narrow and hard to back (a 53' trailer) into in the dark. That may be why it wasn't taken. But I put 'er in. It was a little tight but do-able.

Nice and cool up that high (7,000ft elevation) at night. Was 112 in Casa Grande. Told the WalMart folks, "nope, I'm not going to open the trailer doors (to a minus 10deg F load) until you are ready to begin unloading". "BUT! You WILL sign me in, because I'm NOT LATE!!! Don't you dare stamp that paperwork 'late'!" "

That caused a ruckus. Hehheh...but the warehouse foreman saw things my way. I dropped the trailer in front of the assigned door, then the yard goat driver had to come open the doors and push it back to the dock doors, about 2 hrs after I arrived.

All of which irritated the yard guy, but kept things cooler, saved on reefer fuel, and still kept wild forklift drivers safe from stupid truck drivers that might try and yank a trailer away from a door while a forklift is going in or out. Guys have died that way...

WalMart DC's makes one open the trailer doors, back in, dolly down and disconnect the tractor from the trailer before checking in...

I moved my tandems too. Don't always, but perhaps should. Some places demand it. Others could care less.

Don't ride or drive right next to motor freight. Don't pull in front of a truck, then slow down. Particularly on downgrades. We DO own the road. We pay for it. Stay out of my way. Modern highways were and are designed for motor freight. It's how and why we can move things around cheaply and efficiently enough, that we all benefit economically and in other ways...

Don't believe me? Go drive some old-fashioned 2 lane US highway blacktop --- then carefully consider why modern Interstates were designed (back in the Eisenhower era) the way they are. Think all of that is for cars? Fat chance.

The PA turnpike cost me more than a hundred $$$'s in tolls, 1 way, last time. Crossing Ohio cast about $30 three times. New Mexico waved me down at the Westbound scales near Texas a couple a few weeks ago (more like a guy came charging out of his little chicken shack furiously waving his arms, and pointing for me to park behind the BIG chickencoop. $38.20 just to drive across New Mexico on I-10. Colorado got me last week at the Lamar scales on US 287 coming up from Amarillo. $20.05. What's up with the nickel? I have no idea...at least they didn't give me a level 2 inspection while they were at it. Having an expired IFTA is the problem. Truck owner keeps threatening to fax it to me. Claims he sent it this morning (to the Little America I'd just left). I think he's lying to me. The guy lies all the time it seems. Haven't been paid in a month, either. Not since I started driving this particular rig. I'm in a foul mood. Like I said, stay out of the way. I got 'chur road rage churnin'...

I've driven probably something around 15,000+ miles in the last 4 1/2 weeks. I could tell you about dumb car drivers... but saw something funny today. On I-17 there was a car alongside the road. Get closer, I see a little feller about 4 or 5 years old about 20 paces from the car, away from the road, pants down, taking a leak ( I assume). What was funny was dad. He ran out from the car toward the kid, snapped a photo, then trotted/slunked back toward his car grinning. Had to laugh.

I would not want to be a truck driver today with all of the gov’t micromanagement such as the CDL program, FMCSA regulations, port of entries and their games.

Colorado is one of the few states that don’t count minor violations against your license and don’t even post them to your record but however, the story is different for truck drivers. I know every minor violation goes against your license and they include what you get in your private vehicle. I understand that even parking tickets can cause problems with a CDL ! When the CDL program was passed, one of the champions of it was Senator Danforth of Missouri (RINO) and he was also a big proponent of the 55 mph speed limit.

I also drive vehicles that have dark window tinting and I know for trucks, that is a no, no and they have to follow the federal law (FMCSA regs) on it which is no tint, pretty crappy especially if you drive in the SW US like Arizona.
