Actually, I believe he had a hit before his studio work. If I remember correctly, Campbell was a member of the CHAMPS [short for Texas High School musical champions) along with Seals and Croft and others, and had a hit record with “Tequila”. Read that somewhere.

He was able all right. Producers used to put a chart of the song in front of him before recording and he’d give it a blank look and say “can ya’ hum it?”. He didn’t need to hear much to get in the groove and go.
