Actually, using two browsers will work around the cookies issue. If you browse FreeRepublic with Internet Explorer, and never log in to FaceBook with that browser, and you use FireFox to go to Facebook, then IE won't have any FaceBook cookies to present and it won't track your Freeping to your FB account when it gets the "like" icon.
Another strategy is to block the fbcdn.net domain with your firewall, or use a caching DNS Proxy and configure it to return a loopback address or your own web server for the *.fbcdn.net domain. I use a Linux box for a router/firewall, and it has dnsmasq and a web server. It returns the address of the firewall for all *.fbcdn.net domains and the web server has a virtual server for those domain names that returns the graphics with a red circle/slash "NOT" overlay. So that's what I see for my "Like" button. I also have my firewall set up to block most pay per click advertising domains the same way.
There are a few sites that still give me the FaceBook logos, but those sites have the graphics file hard coded into the HTML or CSS and never access a FaceBook server to get that graphic, so they never give any information to FB to display the logo.

I don’t have Facebook and that damned thing is on my computer. WTF! Isn’t there enough spying and monitoring? Why does FB need to monitor FR? Why did FR sign up for it? Huh????

NO, NO, NO, NO thanks for the FB button. Isn’t there enough monitoring and spying going on? Why the heck is FR allowing other sites to spy?

I don’t know how you’re going to get spam from this function. Your e-mail address is not connected to this function.

If you don’t have FB, then clicking on the ‘like’ button will do nothing more then ask you to sign in to FB.
It won’t ‘track’ anything without a FB account.
And even then, it doesn’t ‘track’ you, it ‘links’ you to facebook.
Anyone with a FB account can set it to ‘private’ where NO ONE can see anything about you. (especially if you don’t fill in any ‘personal’ information)
Relax.

Relax? That’s why we’re in the shape we’re in. Sure, it’ll be easier if you just relax.

Facebook is the opposite of EVERYTHING Free Republic stands for. It could not be a bigger violation of your freedom and privacy to put your political reading and posting habits in a permanent database for all time linked to your name and your other favorite habits and things.
It is pure evil, and last month 6 million Americans figured that out and turned off their Facebook accounts. FB has been turning to developing nations to keep their growth going. People are starting to figure it out.
Twitter as it stands isn’t nearly the same problem but still connects a lot of information between people. It’s much more non-specific as far as who and what though.

I went from this post (your screencap) back out to the list of topics and reopened the topic. Then I opened two other topics. It didn’t show up.
I don’t use FB. Maybe only FB users see it?

It looks like the code for the FaceBook "Like" button is no longer on FreeRepublic. I guess one of the mods or JimRob or JohnRob saw this thread and took some actions.

I don't see any Fabebook icon.
I still just see that tangerine-colored oil funnel with the green spots on it that's always been here.

Just FYI, although some of us value our privacy, there are ways to do the FaceBook "like" button that don't give tracking data to FaceBook. The two options I've seen are:
- Store a copy of the image for the buttons/icons (it's one file that's used with css to display many different icons) on your own server. You can place it with other static graphics, perhaps in the http://www.freerepublic.com/images/ directory or someplace under that. The advantage to that is, minimal recoding of the facebook widget (just change the URL for the graphics), fewer TCP connections started, no need to connect to fbcdn.net servers and most browsers will send the additional request to the www.freerepublic.com server down an existing connection.
- Encode the image file in a data: URL. These start out "data:Image/png;base64;" and then have a base64 encoded string that contains the image data. The advantage to this is it's far quicker, no additional server transaction as the image is in the datastream of the HTML or CSS file that's already being sent. You avoid the request to freerepublic.com, which includes the freerepublic.com cookies from the user, and the overhead of serving up the image file. The disadvantage is that slighly more coding changes are needed in the "FaceBook like button" widget that you embed in the page.

That's odd, because I'm seeing this:

Went to my*account* was able to change all settings. At very bottom there is a button for Apps, games etc. I am not very computer savvy, but I think if anyone wants more privacy you can get it by customizing settings?
Also UI have noticed FB popping up and am asked permission for sites to access acct. Always say NO!
Not sure all above is accurate, but I feel better!
