It has been known that poor conditions for grandparents can affect the health of the grandchildren even if the parents had normal lives. Perhaps this is one explanation. At any rate, I advise anyone planning to get pregnant to go into “training” for 6 months to a year before trying to get pregnant—very good nutrition, exercise, good rest, etc.
