Any FReepers in Miami? Need advice on good and bad areas to stay asap
vanity

Posted on 06/11/2011 2:26:10 PM PDT by penelopesire

Can any FReepers in Miami area let me know how safe the downtown area is and the metro-mover? Should they use cabs or is the metro-mover safe?

My son is going tonight (last minute) to watch the game tomorrow with a friend. He is a grown man(mid twenties), so I don't want to say too much other than watch out and keep your wits about you, etc. But I was reading about the 'good and bad areas' online and some said it was dangerous and others said it was fine. All the sites about 'good and bad' neighborhoods online are so PC...I don't know what to believe. They are staying at a reputable hotel chain downtown near the riverwalk, but it looks very close to 'Little Havana', but not knowing the area, it's hard to tell. I hate Miami ever since almost getting mugged there in college.

I am sure it has changed...but for the better or worse..I don't know.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh...he will. I could tell he was excited. He apparently found tickets last night and is going last minute. He loves basketball and played it all through HS. He made the DFW all stars team his senior year. Only white boy picked...lol. He made the walk-on team at TCU in college, but then decided not to play.

He loves the Mavs!

The hotel might even have a shuttle to Bayside- he could go there early enough to eat (lots of good restaurants there) and just walk across the street to the game.
Liberty City and Overtown are not destinations or thru routes- as someone else said, its not an issue to be concerned with.
Neutral attire is probably a very smart idea— some people will use any excuse to act up.

Liberty city is one very small step above East St. Louis

Thanks so much. If you think of anything else, let me know. I am only going to send one text before he leaves with useful info and then back off. I just have this thing about Miami ever since college. The place scares me...lol.

Stay on Biscayne Blvd, and don’t wander toward downtown. Try Holiday Inn and the Port. Is within walking distance to Arena. Do not stay at Continental Downtown. Yes, it’s cheaper, but they don’t even have a soda machine. Across the street from Holiday Inn is Bayside Mall. Everything he needs is there including Hooters, Chili’s, and other eating places, plus lots of shops. At Holiday Inn, park in back behind hotel, get parking permit from desk clerk. If not, there is a city parking lot in front of Holiday Inn that charges $10 or $15 for 24 hour parking. After the game, walking along Biscayne Blvd back to hotel is easy with plenty of police at road crossing, and plenty of others will be walking that way toward Mall also. Cross the street directly in front of hotel to Mall. Is a two jump crossing. First he’ll have to cross Biscayne Blvd Southbound. Then wait on island to cross Northbound traffic. Enter mall where he can see Banyon tree. Do not enter mall from any other location as there are beggars and possible muggers waiting along the sidewalk. And, yes, there will be several people at hotel, at mall, and at arena who can speak English.

Honest,
Get a map and stay OUT of Overtown and Liberty City.
Miami can be lots of fun get a list of current events and festivals.
Good foods from around the world.
Same for cultures.
It’s hot and going to get hotter.
If you like fishing or diving you are there if not it is a great time to learn.

>I’ve “hated” Miami and vowed never to go anywhere near there when one time we were at Miami airport and I discovered they made announcements about flight in spanish FIRST and then in English so all the hispanics could rush to the next gate to get the seats on a cancelled flight.<

Whenever I go back to Canuckistan, Alaska Air does that too. They’re cheap but it annoys me that they have to do the spanish thing when 95% of the passengers inside were white during that flight to Wa state.

Yeah, that sounds like a real crackhouse! Hope he wears a kevlar suit!

Sheesh, wish I could afford that. Chill and let him have fun.

The Hyatt on the River is a great location. You can take the people mover directly to the area. ( you can probably pick it up at 4th & River). Also, to your south is Brickell. (Picture a mini-Manhattan corridor) with 5 star hotels, good restaurants (Mary Brickell Village) & lots of banks.

You are generally safe in this area. Although one word of warning Obama will be here on Monday!!!!!! ($35k a plate fundraiser in Coconut Grove).

Thanks..this is all I needed to know, so I can stop being ‘worried mom’(nobody likes ‘her’....lol).

I just know how some downtown areas in big cities are not so hot late at night(particularly Miami). He is coming back Monday..hopefully before Zero even gets there....LOL.
Can’t wait to tell him Zero is going to be there...he will get a kick out of that. I wonder if Zero is going to the game?

If he doesn’t act like an idiot, he’ll be fine.

Which is good advice for most places.

Oh! Almost forgot: Tell him if he winds up someplace where there are hipster girls, to “casually” throw into conversation that he just got back from spending a few months in Brooklyn.

Works like a charm.
