LOL! I have said that if Motley Crue remade the “Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room” video today, the pentacle-wearing dog that eats the kid’s homework would be a pit bull. Fashion of the times, dontchaknow.

That cat was quite a creature.
Thankfully she did NOT resemble her father.
She was mostly leg, long springy legs, she had a protruding breastbone, a drooping skull, ear tufts, cheek tufts, and the lighter colored bars on the ears.
From her mom she got long fur so that she ended up resembling a Norwegian Forest Cat mackeral tabby with white.And that was how I could pass her off as a normal cat, so long as she didn’t meow [she did a soft version of the bobcat ‘mwowm’] or didn’t snort out through her nose at people.
She did get the parakeet out of the birdcage by jumping six foot into the air and getting the door open.
She weighed in at 23 pounds of muscle.
Only one vet looked at her and recognized what she was.
Thankfully he didn’t rat me out, he said obviously she wasn’t a threat to anyone.
He said that while she was purring and rubbing against him.
She liked car rides, but had to be sitting in the passenger seat watching where we were going.
However, I know that bobcat cossbreeds are a roll of the dice and what I got adopted by was a rarity.
If anyone was serious about making a Catbob, they’d have to begin a program like the Russians did with their domesticated fox genetic study.

If you didn’t see this on TV, it is a *must* for all dog lovers.
It will tear you apart to hear these brave old soldiers getting emotional over the dogs who saved their lives.
One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen.
@ Salamander: Sorry about not realizing how many pit bulls there are out there. I don’t like the looks of pit bulls, but that’s my choice and I won’t try to make other people follow my choice. With regard to your dog-training, I lived with German Shepherds all of my life growing up, and had a former NCO dad who took care of the disciplining of the dogs. Some of your methods are ones which are new to me, but many of the others are ones I’m quite used to seeing. Some people seem to think they can treat large dogs as humans and be friends with them. It simply doesn’t work — dogs, unlike humans, don’t treat weakness kindly and don’t have chivalry. Being friends with a toy poodle may work, but only because it’s not going to do the amount of damage a large breed can do if it feels like trying to take charge and be the alpha dog for a few days.
@ Darksheare: Thanks for the note about your bobcat crossbreed. I wish I could have seen that cat! Here in the Ozarks that cat might have attracted attention from the police, but it would be in the category of admiring comments like “Wow... that’s one bad-ass kitty!”
@ Slings and Arrows: I like what I read about Savanna Cats. I choose to spend my money in other ways — those things can cost more than good-quality used cars — but personally I like the ides of having a 20-pound cat with wildcat-like fur and totally strange vocalizations that can be walked on a leash, has the personality of a dog, and is fiercely loyal to its “mom.” If I still lived in a cold climate like Michigan, it would be even better to have a living and purring fur cushion on my lap around December and January — not so sure I’d like that in a Missouri summer.
@ mojitojoe: I don’t dispute your right to get rid of a bad tenant and to refuse to pay a higher insurance premium, and from what you say, I agree this tenant has issues. The pit bills are only a symptom of a bigger problem, and dogs that tear holes in a fence need to be stopped no matter what the breed. (Snarling at people passing by may be entirely appropriate protective behavior, but not trying to tear open the fence. Depending on details, I don’t necessarily have a problem with dogs attacking people who cross a fenceline to get into property that isn’t theirs, presuming it’s clearly posted “no trespassing” with a dog warning.)
If you don’t like pit bulls, you have every right to refuse to allow them in the home you own. I also agree that regulation by cities is a whole lot better than by the state and federal governments, but in this case I seriously question whether there is any good basis for it, or even if there is a good basis, whether it’s the proper role of the government.,
I’ve never understood the idea of breed bans. Punishing bad behavior I do understand; it’s not much different from dealing with a minor child. If the parent can’t discipline the kid and the kid runs around breaking windows and spray-painting cars, the governmental authorities have to step in and force the parent to pay for the consequences of the kid’s behavior. Until somebody gets harmed, it is none of the government’s business how people raise their kids or train their animals — but bad raising/training will produce bad consequences that sooner or later may come to the attention of the government.
Mostly they’ve dropped the outdated and now know to be incorrect stuff like “alpha rolling” and all the other “dominance & submission” physical crap because violence always begets violence and brutalizing a sharp breed is foolhardy, at best.
It’s far better to become fluent in dog body language and communicate with them in a way they can perfectly understand.
Once correctly established, your position remains secure.

I wish you’d seen the cat my dad’s friend had.
He claimed it was a bobcat mix.
I don’t know if that was so since I was only about 7 when he took me to see it.
That freaking cat weighed 35 pounds and was as big as medium dog.
It *seemed* friendly enough but I wouldn’t go near it.
His “meows” sounded just like the ones I’d hear back in the woods near the old trash dumping spot and I *knew* there was a bobcat back there because it occasionally got my gramma’s chickens.
*Big* ‘house cat’ that *was* big enough to eat me....;]
I’m friends with my big dog.
I’ve earned that and his respect.
He’s a support dog and if he feels me going wobbly [pinched nerve in hip] he chivalrously shoves himself up against me to keep me from falling.
If he finds me down, he’ll let me grab onto to him while braces himself so I can get back up.
He doesn’t respond to “heel”, he responds to “hip” and when we’re walking, he’s pushed tightly against my leg with his head and neck turned across my hips, supporting me.
He knows it’s his duty to compensate for my ‘weakness’ and he does a damn fine job of it.
When my hip “went out” in Best Buy last December, at least 6 “men” walked right around me as I struggled to get off the floor by grabbing onto the shelves to pull myself up.
Who really possessed more “chivalry”?...:)

The yard is fenced all the way around. Lots of people ride bikes or walk by there. Kids walk by there after they get off of the school bus. According to neighbors and LEO’s the dogs have gone right over that 5’ chain link fence. THAT is why they are hiding them in the house and in the enclosed garden area with lattice. Now they just destroy the lattice to get out. They also bite and tear the chain link fence with their teeth. I noticed yesterday there is an area of the fence that is damaged. It looks like that was the spot where they did it the most, trying to make that their escape area until they confined them to the house.
I can assure you, if you come to my house or to my gate, my dogs will bark, a lot. If you go by the back in a boat and you have a dog on it, they will bark. They will make it clear they don’t know you. But they would never bite the fence in anger as they tried to get to you. If you came in the fence, one or two might come to you to be petted, the other, would probably keep barking and be very stand offish. That’s the nature of the breed. Aloof with strangers. I don’t leave my dogs outside when we leave. The dogs are inside and the alarm is on.
NOBODY was crossing that fence line to get into the rental property. The dogs wanted to cross the fence line to get to the people walking or riding bikes on public streets and sidewalks. If they go that psycho, biting the fence, acting like rabid dogs, what would they do if they got out?
Bottom line, I hate that breed. They are ugly as sin, unpredictable, the pounds are full of them as people get rid of them when they see what a$$holes they are or can’t find a place to live that will accept them.
I am entitled to my opinion. It’s the only breed if dog that I despise. Seriously, what motivates one to get that dog? Short guy syndrome? Who says “ Let’s get a dog.Hmmm what kind? ........ hmmmmmm I know....Let’s get an ugly one, that has a bad reputation for killing kids, eating babies, mauling the elderly, killing other dogs, especially small ones, loves to fight, has jaws of steel and clamps on and shakes whatever it grabs, then I’ll look like the bad a$$ that I’m not.”
I’m done with this thread. I think I have made my feelings perfectly clear and I see what type of people have those dogs. The majority of people that own them are not the majorities if you get my drift.
I have a sneaky suspicion that 99% of the defenders either have one or have a family member that has one. Butt face ugly, fat dogs. I’m done with this thread.
I don’t have $20K to burn on a cat either, but if I did I’d be tempted.
@ Mojitojoe: We agree on this much: what you are describing is unacceptable behavior for a dog, and also tenant behavior that no landlord should have to tolerate. Even if that weren't the case, you've got every right in the world to choose what dogs you like and dislike, and (within the confines of the law) to choose who you want as tenants.
Personally I don't like pit bulls. I'm not going to defend the breed. I am going to say I don't want the government regulating things it doesn't need to regulate. I cannot imagine the Founding Fathers thinking that the “enumerated powers” under the federal constitution somehow included dog breed rules, except perhaps the right to impose high tariffs on importation of dogs coming from foreign countries. Maybe cities could make a health-and-safety argument for the constitutional right to regulate breeds, but I still think it's bad policy even if it's constitutionally permissible to do so, and I'm not yet sure it's constitutionally permissible, though that will depend on the laws and constitutions of each of the states.
The cat was a ‘happy accident’.
If one were to try and duplicate it, they would first need to ensure that the other half of the breeding stock were friendly.
And bobcats are famous for being unpredictable.
The Russians had a genetic study on foxes going where they actually managed to have tame fox after less than twelve ‘generations’.
Something similar could be done with bobcat to create a stable friendly breeding stock base.
But the enviros in this country would freak out about that.
And the cats would also similarly be targeted for hatred much like you’ve seen happen in this thread towards ‘pit bulls’.
