I aint trying to start no fight, but Ill finish one every timeso crows the country star Blake Shelton in the song that won the first-ever prize for Best Web Video at the CMT Music Awards, broadcast from Nashville this Wednesday evening. Shelton is a coward, and Im saying that not to pick a fight with him, but to defend country music fans from his award-winning songs assault on their freedom of individual expression.
The title is Kiss My Country Ass, and its less a song than litany of cynically baiting Red State tropes and cliches. The opening lines:
"Tearin down a dirt road, rebel flag flyin, coon dog in the back,
Truck bed loaded down with beer and a cold one in my lap."
Each stanza presents more of the same kind of thing, listed like the ingredients on one of those beer cans, and the items on the songs listWrangler jeans, Marlboro Reds, a gun, a flag, a daddy who fought in Vietnamare as interesting as barley, hops, and water. Though Shelton is credited with the video hit of the song, it was originally released by the singer Rhett Atkins and written by Atkins with Nashville song-mill writers Dallas Davidson and Jon Stone.
For all its rebel posturing, Kiss My Country Ass is a play-show act of defense from a straw attack and, worse, an insult to the ideals of individual freedom that it pretends to defend.

Both of ours are resuces, too. They’re really neat cats. Very distinct personalities and a quirky intelligence. If they haven’t been abused, they make really great family members. We got our first one, Norman vas Paus from the Kootenai Animal Shelter as a just-weaned kitten. Last summer was the Summer of Norman.
Six months later, we got Miss Olivia from another rescue operation. She’s a pure bred, but she’d been abandoned. All too common thing these days. She’d been chipped, so her history wasn’t a complete mystery. We figured that Norman needed a pal, and it’s worked out really, really well.
Have fun with yours.
Does the song say anything about Mama or trains or trucks or prison or getting drunk?
Reallly? I've loved her music even before she became more famous. Got 3 of her CD's. She sang at the Peach Drop in Atlanta one year I found her really entertaining.
Trucks and drinking, and Daddy.
Sometimes you can’t cover all the bases, but this is close.
Nah, can't be. I freely admit that I hate country music, but they kicked me out of the snob club when they found out that I don't like jazz or opera either.
Don’t waste the beer... Just hit him in the head with a full can and then slap the can on the top a few times to settle the beer before you open it.
