In addition, apparently the volcano itself has not erupted from its old caldera. Instead, it has ripped a huge gash into the surface of the earth 6 miles long by 3 miles wide, 2.5 miles away! Amazing.
Its called a linear vent eruption and they aren't even remotely uncommon.

1. I think the main thing they were saying was uncommon was the quakes so far from the eruption.
2. They MAY also have been saying that the EXTENT of the linear vent eruption was uncommon.
