I bought my first gun

Posted on 06/06/2011 1:08:04 PM PDT by Scythian

I finally broke down and purchased my first gun for home protection.

It's the Mossberg 500 12 gauge. It has a short barrel and is great for in the home use. It even comes with a pistol grip but I wont attach that unless it everything goes all "beyond thunderdome" on us.

Going to take my wife out and make sure she knows how to handle it. I felt a shotgun was better and safer for an in home protection mechanism in our case. Heck, just the pump-action noise is enough to send someone packing.

Anyway, in for a penny in for a pound. I set aside money for 3 purchases of different firearms. I feel safer knowing we have it, just hope to never do anything with it.

Not that would ever see buckshot coming by. The pellets wouldn’t come close to the other side of my lake.

Depends on what, if anything is down range.

If one is on a California beach they are pretty safe shooting west. Plus a lot of ocean liners have skeet shooting off of the fantail.

Basically water is no more likely to cause a ricochet than a hard packed dirt field.

I’ll dig some up and ping you to them when I’m not behind a firewall. Yea, they’re ugly. But they’d be very, very useful in certain social situations.

Would appreciate a ping to that rail stuff, too.

She didn’t shoot either one of us one her first time out.

And she did shoot the target.

Now I just need her to be more concerned about how she sets the gun down when she is done...

I (unfortunately) learn everything the HARD way. If I can save somebody trouble, I try. :-) Thanks for the kind words. :-)

Thank you ... did some digging this afternoon. Looks like a nice addition to my Winchester in .357. I’m leaving the Marlin in original though.

I hope you find the information useful in some way. It does seem a shame to spoil the wonderful lines of a classic lever gun that way, but hey, if it works..

The Winchester has the cowboy saddle ring and all, but I’ve had to repair it a couple of times, and it works just fine, so now it’s just a home defense weapon. I’m thinking of a Trijicon dot sight to mount on the rail. I’m really more interested in the rail systems for ‘clients’.

Great quote from your link..."Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job."
