Pet pit bull mauls and kills 15-day-old baby
Pit bulls and other large dogs continue to maim and kill people. Is it because these dogs are aggressive and dangerous or are they owned by irresponsible and careless people?
Buster didn't have a history of being aggressive. He was a family pet, a year old and hyper like many young dogs. Buster's owner, 25-year-old Mallory Wildig had been staying at her mother's house following the birth of Darius on February 4 along with her 2-year-old son, Keylin Tillman. She would return home to feed Buster and let him outside. The times she couldn't get home a friend of her father would stop by to feed the dog. Wildig and her two children returned home on February 19. She had Keylin feed the dog, he was then let outside and given a bath afterward.
After reading to the children in Keylin's room she turned a movie on for Keylin and took the infant to her room for a nap. After closing the door she returned to Keylin's room and laid down with him for his nap. The dog was on the floor near them. Her cell phone woke her up about 10 minutes later. She went to check on Darius and found him on the floor dead.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety report said she, “discovered that Darius was dead and had been mauled and partially consumed by Buster."
The report said she sobbed throughout her initial interview with Detective Sheila Goodell. According to Mlive.com Wildig told the detective when she found her son his bassinet was tipped over and Darius was on the floor.
According to the police report Wildig said, “When I walked into the room, there was blood on the bassinet and he just looked like a little doll on the floor. It felt like all of this was a nightmare.”
Charges of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to animals were sought against Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office declined to authorize charges. lamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carrie Klein said, “This was her baby. She loved her baby. She was traumatized by what happened.”
Klein said to charge Klein there there would have be gross negligence showed.
Klein said, “Nobody ever saw any aggressive or violent tendencies from the pet at all. There was no way for the mother to know it was going to attack and kill someone. It was not gross negligence on her part to have the dog running loose in the house with the baby in the bassinet. She had no way of knowing the dog was going to do what it did.”
Buster was euthanized and an autopsy showed the dog's stomach was full of food.
Last month, Saquina Jubeark, a mother of three little boys, ages 2, 4 and 5 said she left the room they were in to get something out of the stroller. When she returned to the room where the boys were she saw her Cane Corso tearing at the 4-year-old. The little boy died from being bitten in the head and neck.
According to neighbors the home was like a zoo with the Cane Corso, a pit bull, a German Shepherd, a parrot and a snake.
Neighbors said it took 10 firefighters to remove the dogs from the home.
Nydailynews.com reports Kenny Riser the superintendent of the building said "People were scared of those dogs. The dogs belong to the husband, who is seldom here. This was a tragedy waiting to happen."
Shelbra Freeman, 72-years-old saw her neighbors pit bull loose and was trying to let them know when the dog turned on her.
Another neighbor heard the dog barking and when she went outside she saw Freeman near her yard. wyff4.com reports her neighbor Erica Sykes said, "(Freeman) was just laying here screaming for help and she had blood running everywhere. So, I just wrapped her arm up with a towel and squeezed it real tight and just tried to help her breathe and calm down because she was still screaming .All I was worried about was just helping her. I mean, it was shocking."
Another neighbor said, "I ran over there. She was sitting up with her ear lobe chewed off and blood all over her arms and, I mean, it was just horrible." Freeman is recovering in a hospital.
Chad McBride from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the dog is being quarantined for 10 days and the owner, David Milner, has been cited for no proof of rabies and dog running at large.

You cite freak accidents (horse falls on kid) and compare them with a dog breed that kills a disproportionate number of people - on average 1 every 22 days - compared with all other dog breeds. Do horses break free of their restraints as often as pits do - and go on a killing rampage? Are police summoned to shoot rampaging horses spontaneously mauling and killing people who are minding their own business as often as they are called to kill attacking pits? How about hogs and bulls? Are they frequently seen in packs roaming neighborhoods and spontaneously attacking and killing people at the pit rate? Do people insist on keeping horses, bulls, hippos, and hogs in residential homes and then panic when these animals suddenly turn on their family members?
Oh yes - exotic animals like hippos - lots of those running lose in the streets of the US killing 1 person every 22 days, requiring police shootings more than other breeds etc.
You can’t refute the truth about pits without reaching for freak accidents or exotic animals because pit aggression is freakish and more typical of exotic animals. You know it, I know it and breed specific laws and bans on pits are simply acknowledging that fact. The death toll and catastrophic injuries caused by pits more than any other breed are ok with you - they are not ok with me. Quick! Call me a liberal or names like ‘hysterical’ - it will no doubt erase from my mind the fact that we both know pits are responsible for disproportionate amounts of carnage.

Actually, it’s a common breed trait.
They’re very “mouthy” and will frequently love their owners by holding onto them.
When I leave, he holds my hand briefly.
When I come home, he greets me by grabbing my hand and pulling me into the living room, whole-body-wiggling.
It’s the only way they have to “hold your hand”, really.
Odin falls asleep beside me with my hand held gently in his mouth fairly frequently.
I think it’s so I can’t “sneak off” without him knowing about it so he can wake up and follow me...:D
He does it so softly and lovingly that I don’t have the heart to deny him what seems to be a very psychologically ‘necessary’ display of his extreme affection.
He also mouths and nibble-grooms his pack mates’ necks and they love it so I reckon it’s a “dog language thing”.

Unfortunately the media loves the pitbull killer stories. Plus, there are so many pit crosses in shelters now, it might be difficult to find any dogs in some areas that don’t have any pit in them at all, so probably a lot of dog bites ARE by dogs with at least a drop of pit bull in them. I doubt most of the dog bites are perpetrated by well bred dogs of any breed, frankly.
The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates at least one child in the United States dies every five days from choking on food. The academy rates choking as the leading cause of death among children 14 and younger.

Yeah, goldens are mouthy too. I had a friend with a dobie who used to suck her own thigh (like a kid would suck his thumb) when she went to sleep. Kind of strange. She was a cool dog tho.

Food is necessary for survival. A pit bull is only necessary for ego purposes - some people like to be able to brag that it takes a special kind of person to maintain dominance over a pit.

I can see why you’d want to change the subject - the fact that this thread is about a pit killing a baby makes you uncomfortable. Then I go and point out the documentation that shows that pits kill a disproportionate number of people etc. and that doesn’t build your ego either. So you throw a stick and tell me to fetch. Not interested. The caliber of debate offered by the pro pit lobby on this thread involves amusement parks, hippos, and ‘why is the sky blue’ questions to try to conceal that the pro pit lobby does not accept responsibility for the actions of it’s breed of choice - they want the rest of us to just get used to the death toll.

The lie arises when people present them as gospel truth without investigating their veracity.

I've seen other self professed 'experts' claim 1%
while others estimate, based on shelter populations, a much higher percentage, ex. 20+%.
Who is correct? Mostly likely no one because there is no accurate count.
Looking at the guesses of 5% vs 7% and using AVMA 2006 estimate of US dog population of 72 million.
7% ===> 5.04 million
5% ===> 3.6 million
difference ===> 1.44 million.....a rather substantial difference.
Which of you 2 experts is correct?
As a self professed expert your knowledge of "pitts", by your own admission,
comes not from owning them, nor training them, nor from substantial interaction with them
but rather is based on questionable data and sources
and on your simplistic theory of the function of these dogs.
(I have little trouble imaging you or someone like you using a very similar
argument in dealing with these 'killer dogs' from my neck of the woods)
They are a terrier and bulldog cross
and have characteristics shared with all other terriers and bulldogs.
Any type/breed of medium to large size,
which is not raised, controlled and trained in a responsible manner
will on extremely rare occasions injure or kill people.
For those of us not making money providing biased opinions in court,
our time is better spent educating the public about the principles of responsible dog ownership.
Principles that hold regardless of breed and if applied will always prevent dog attacks.
If you had to prepare for a case or two and study all the bites on a set of corners photos of a dead child you might just have a little different feeling in the pit of your stomach too

We have a livestock sale in the next town over and several times a year, a bull or steer breaks free and has to be shot in the city streets for doing exactly what you described.
