NECN is doing a stellar job of tracking two or three "historic" tornado storms.
My thoughts, exactly. Poor Springfield...it’s such a blighted community. Even in the daylight, people are fearful to be on the streets. Wishing them well.
National Guard on the move per "Springfield Republican" and MassLive.
From the video of the funnel cloud over the Memorial Bridge, my thought is that good thing it was well-built in the 1920’s. Can you imagine if that crossing was taken down and people couldn’t cross the River there? Yipes!
I’m stunned...BTW, more storms west of Springfield, moving out of CT. This weather event isn’t over by a long shot. And sadly, WWLP is reporting at least one fatality in the city of Springfield.
The last outbreak in MA like this was in 1954, when 90 people died in Worcester.
The one in Gt Barrington (90’s)was pretty bad too but not as widespread(that thing hopped hills).....amazing how far this cell went and the damage it caused.
(and....it’s thundering/lightening and raining again! just ducky!)
You guys don’t have tornado sirens, do you?
Much damage. Thank God, my family are all OK .. awaiting
word from friends.
Hang in there. I still have friends there in East Longmeadow and Agawam; waiting for them to e-mail me back. No doubt power and wireless may be out for a while.
Just got in and heard this on the news coming home- unREAL.
I think there was a tornado a llllong time ago in Worcester- but other than that one I never heard of one while growing up on the Cape.
Wild times!
I was just in East Longmeadow. Power is out for most of the town, no damage that I can see besides some leaves and small twigs. I was in one of the supermarkets and they said phone service has been spotty, cell service had dropped several times.
SO wild! The Worcester F5 was in ‘56, I think. This is historic for the area and many outbreaks. Just freaky.
Now, it may heading toward the coast and islands.

State of emergency declared after Mass. tornadoes
Massachusetts Gov. Deval (deh-VAL’) Patrick has declared a state of emergency and has called up 1,000 National Guard troops following what he said were two damaging tornadoes that swept through the state.
1954, 90 killed.
Our power company, AEP Ohio is already enroute to assist according to our TV stations in Columbus.
Last I heard in the Western MA area from the two major utilities, National Grid has upward of 35K without power and WMECO has 20K. I know of several cities in MA have their own power companies, and at least one was hit hard.

55k total down is a blessing considering the magnitude of the storms. The last time we had similar weather, we had over 400,000 out in a seven county area for at least six hours.
I remember the Worcester tornado, although I lived in Boston.
An awful day with many deaths.
We just never expected it in our area.
