Scott-Heron died on the afternoon of May 27, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, New York City, after becoming ill upon returning from a European trip. Scott-Heron had confirmed previous press speculation about his health, when he disclosed in a 2008 New York Magazine interview, that he had been HIV-positive for several years, and that he had been previously hospitalized for pneumonia. The cause of Scott-Heron's death has yet to be announced. He is survived by daughter, Gia from his marriage to Brenda Sykes.

That one album was great! I knew it was liberal nonsense, even at the time, but it was still a rocking good album.
I’ll never forget dancing to “What’s the word? JOHANNESBURG!”
at a party in some NYC loft, or whatever, in the early 80s. Very early.
RIP Gil Scott Heron, you stinking lefty, but you did rock!

This racist was reared in the same area of the country as Van Jones. Jackson, Tennessee, is a hotbed of white hating blacks that most people cannot fathom and ignore. Race relations will never improve as long as there are racists like these in Jackson preaching the mantras as they do.

The song I remember from him was “Legend in His Own Mind”. Every time I’d meet some guy, whether it be on a personal or business basis, who was full of himself, Heron’s song came to mind.
I guess he had a bad end to his life. I read the other day that he didn’t even have mirrors in his apartment since he looked so bad. The picture on this thread confirms that opinion.

It’s very sad. He did rock, had some great lines (”Good advice don’t make it if there’s no one there to take it”) and a good groove. But as someone pointed out, he was a prophet of misery.
