Ringo Starr looks at a photograph of his young self and laughs.
We didnt know what was ahead of us. You never do. We didnt think it would last.
The black-and-white image shows the Beatles in suits in the early Sixties, waiting to appear on a television show. Hes not sure which one. Paul is whistling, George is distracted, John is wide-eyed and Ringo is staring at the camera, his feet up on a seat. In the picture (below) he looks the most assured, by far.
Even Paul thought, Well, Ill probably end up as a writer. So did John. George was going to have a garage.
But Ringo was a drummer before the Beatles and he still is, long after them. Nearly half a century later, at the age of 70, the boy in that picture is preparing to go on the road again, touring Britain and Europe with the latest incarnation of his All Starr Band.
He rarely gives interviews, and gets frustrated when all people want to talk about is the Fab Four, but today says hes at ease with it. So here goes. How does it feel to be a Beatle, at his age?

Pete Best will outlive them all!
Paul is getting married to some socialite.
I know. Her father was in some kind of trouble.
Ringo is average, but oddly, he is perhaps the person most responsible for the Beatles' music's uniqueness. The drum beat for rock music of that era was generally loose -- had a bit of a lag -- which carried over from its R&B roots. That's what gave it a feeling of hipness. Ringo's drumming was more incessant. He played a more European beat. That gave their music more energy and that was their signature style.
And commie.
And self centered weirdo. Total wingnut.
Oh, and musical genius.
I can't remember which Beatle said it, but he basically said that Ringo was the second best drummer in the Beatles, next to Paul. Paul did the drums on "The Ballad of John and Yoko", and he played all the instruments on his first solo album "McCartney", the one with "Maybe I'm Amazed."
And Your Bird Can Sing
Thanks for posting this, Ringo is my fave beatle.
The drumming on “Rain” was his best work - quite inventive within the scope of the Beatles recordings.

I remember for MONTHS hearing “Beatles One” after it came out. The kids played it at the coffee counter at the Blue Wall every darn day. One afternoon I asked the young girl serving me iced coffee when she was born. She told me a date long after the band broke up — but those kids LOVED the Beatles...
“If Chapman had been a little to the left, he woulda been a hero.”
Mozart was a musical genius. Lennon was a talented song writer.
