"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

- 7:00 p.m. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar
1/3/60 "The Hapless Ham Matter" Matter #672 Bob Bailey, Virginia Gregg (Miss Delsy), Chet Stratton, Lawrence Dobkin (Pat McCracken), Sam Edwards, Herb Ellis, Ralph Moody, Junius Matthews (Mr. Halsey) ; Writer/Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Dan Cubberly ; Expense account Total = $100 ; Promo from last week's show: "It's called the Hapless Ham Matter. And, yeah, you've guessed it, the ham turns out to be an actor. A really bad one with one of the cleverest methods of committing murder I've ever known. There's a lot of action, suspense in the story and I think you'll like it. Who knows, maybe if you listen closely you'll be able to figure out his method even before I do. so join up, won't you? Yours truly. Johnny Dollar." Johnny receives a call at 10:08 AM from Walter E. Lynch, 13421 Peachtree Lane, Manchester, Connecticut, wanting protection for his threatened life. Pat McCracken of the Universal Adjustment Bureau finds out that Lynch is insured by the Eastern Trust & Insurance Company, Hartford. McCracken's secretary, Miss Delsy, provides the information that the beneficiary of the $50,000 policy is Walter's 25 year old nephew Fred Lynch, a New York City actor who lives at 1231 W. 43rd Street. When Johnny arrives at Walter's house he finds police Sergeant Beckley, a doctor, and officer Conroy investigating the stabbing death of Walter. The wound was made by a curious thin double edge blade. The doctor puts the time of death around 10 AM. Next door neighbor old Mister Halsey found the body, and says that he saw Fred leave shortly before 10 AM according to the announcer of radio station WDRC's time tone. Fred then caught a slow local bus back to New York City. Since Johnny talked to Walter at 10:08 it appears that prime suspect Fred has an alibi. Johnny speeds down to Fred's New York apartment and gets there before Fred. He slips the superintendent $10 and gets into Fred's room. When Fred enters Johnny pretends to be an actor's agent who wants Fred for a part in which he ages 20 years between each act. Johnny tricks Fred into impersonating an old man and recreating the call that he placed to Johnny in which he pretended to be his old uncle Walter which thereby established his alibi. Fred pulls a double-edged Arabian knife on Johnny, but the latter shoots his hand. Commercials for Winston, Mona Freeman for Four Way Cold Tablets. Promo for Suspense, presenting Ray Bradbury's "Zero Hour". (23:28)

Near Cottonwood, Jack Jackson is taking his cattle to water and discovers that the Cottonwood Pond is fenced off by Howard, who owns the property. Matt and Chester head to the pond and find 50-60 men squared off on the verge of fighting. Dike Howard intends to raise the charge for allowing people to water on his land. Howard is legally right but morally wrong. Fenton, who works for Howard comes into town and says that Howard wants him to deputize his men. Matt kicks him out. Matt looks through the old law books left by a young lawyer from Boston who died in Dodge City last year. He finds a passage that has to do with an authority having powers during an emergency. Matt feels he is an authority and that the draught constitutes an emergency. Nearing 9 PM, Matt goes out to the Pond and tells Howard and Jackson that under the law he is taking charge of the situation and he has determined that Jackson's cattle can water. Howard objects and swears to fight. Dillon deputizes Jackson's 25 men. Some shots ring out. The cattle begin to head to the water. Matt tells Chester he is going top arrest Howard for attempted murder. Howard's men start a fire in an attempt to stampede the herd. Matt's new deputies start a back fire to contain the original fire. Thunder is heard, and the wind changes, driving the backfire toward Dodge City. Fenton appears and pulls a gun on Matt, saying the backfire has destroyed the Howard farmhouse. Matt shoots Fenton down. The sky opens up and a deluge puts the backfire out. More shots ring out at Matt and Chester as they ride to town. It is Howard who has good cover behind a tree. Matt and Chester are about to rush Howard's hiding spot when they hear the scream of Howard who has just been struck dead with lightening. (Sus.) (CBS) (29:52)

Arthur & David Kogan ; Announcer - Bill Tompkins ; Music Conductor - Emerson Buckey ; Music Composer - Richard Dupage ; Sound Effects - MarioSiletti ; Mutual Broadcasting System, New York ; sustained ; A newly graduated lawyer awakes with a dead body in bed and has a very difficult time getting rid of that body! A small midwestern college campus is hosting the reunion of the class of '36. Lawyer Paul Baxter meets two old friends, Steve and Bert. They ask Paul about Marsha, who he was going to marry and into whose father's law practice he was going to enter. Paul recalls to them the party the last night of school. He says he must have drunk too much. When he awoke he remembered that he was supposed to meet Marsha and her father at 1:00 PM. When he awoke there was a man in his bed. The man, a stranger who looked like a derelict, was dead with Paul's hunting knife in his heart. Paul recalls that he heard Steve and Bert knocking on his door, but he ignored them. What was he to do? Paul thought he might place the dead man in the dumb waiter, lower him to the basement where his car was parked and then take the body somewhere to get rid of it. However Jenny, the cleaning woman let herself in with her key. She gives him five minutes to get his sick friend dressed and out of the room. Marsha calls at that moment, and tells him he has 45 minutes to keep with the appointment with her father who is a stickler for punctuality. She keeps talking while Jenny says that he has a minute left. He puts the body in the dumb-waiter. When he gets to the basement Ben the janitor is lowering the dumb-waiter. He asks Ben to run an errand for him. He is finally able to get Ben to go to his room for 1/2 of a bottle before Jenny pours it down the sink. Paul loads the body on his car and as he is driving away he ignores Ben who is calling to him. Paul runs a red-light and Dugan the cop stops him. Dugan asks what is under the blanket. Paul says that it is a fraternity buddy who is sick, and he is taking him to the Turkish Bath on Elm Street. Paul has to stop for gas. The attendant tries to close the back door, and is unable to after several attempts. It is a hand that is keeping the door open, and the attendant ses it. Then Paul thinks of the perfect way to get rid of the body - the dissecting room of the medical school. Johnson the janitor sees him. Johnson thinks he is just returning a body that was stolen as a prank, and for $50 he will keep his mouth shut. The body is #37 that was stolen last night. Paul passed out and was unconscious for a week. It was just a practical joke that had been played on Paul. Paul lost interest in law, never married Marsha, never became her father's junior partner. Steve and Bert say that they came to his room to tell him but there was no answer, they then called from the train station and told Ben to tell him. Paul attacks Steve and Bert threatening to kill them. He is stopped by attendants from his insane asylum. (Sus.) (MBS) (29:18)

Hey Gina. Did the rain come?
We finally got a sunny weekend here and I’ve been grilling and smoking like my life is dependent on it. Did a couple soda can chickens and today I put a fatty in the smoker. You ever heard of these? It’s basically stuffed sausage wrapped in bacon.

That sounds good! I’ve not heard of THAT kind of fatty, but it also sounds delicious.
Last night we grilled four filet mignons and four sweet potatoes (wrapped in foil) for us and two friends. I had soaked the filets in pineapple juice for two days, and they were mighty fine with that mesquite smoke on them!
Alas, no rain for us, still. Today is warm and very humid.

Oh, grouper is really, really fine!
I love cobia, too (lemon fish). Shoot, I love fish, in general!
Speaking of fish... That reminds me of a hilarious girl singer who does a fabulous spoof of the song “Memory” from the musical Cats—not like you’ve heard before:
