A weed is any plant that is not where a human wants it.
Check with local landscapers, nurserymen, etc. Is there a native grass that might fit your needs?
Here in Texas, the native grasses (big and little bluestem, sideoats, buffalo grass) flourish, but the suburbanits still think they must have St. Augustine. All this does is waste water.
We here in liberal S. FL and everyone seems to want to plant non native water sucking and gas powered trimmer needing plants. We have had a *drought* every year we’ve lived here and our lawn looks like hell (we get our water for the yard from the canal, so when it’s low there’s not enough water pressure to really water it). I never understand why people don’t just plant things that do well in the native climate AND things that don’t require manicuring. Of course, I hate yardwork. I guess all those hedges are important to keep people employed.
Our lawn was St. Augustine when we bought the house. I've thought about going with native buffalo. There are several patches of it on the edge of my lot. It can look dead as ever, get a one inch rain and be green within a few days.
