He stood up against the liberal elites of Old Hollywood in defense of the Viet Nam War and its despised vets, honored American traditions and values in his movies and survived the Big C to help fight it with his money and star power.
Personally, I fell in love with him when he was the only Hollywood star to stand up in defense of the raped and vilified Patty Hearst during her trial. The misogynistic left was laughing at her multiple rapes by the SLN and the Duke quietly said: leave that little girl alone. As a twenty year old girl myself I was gobsmacked by his kindness.
