Houston, Dallas has a problem.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dallas City Hall could face another massive budget deficit for 2011-12

The city of Dallas is only a few months into its current budget, but it already is looking ahead to what could be yet another bleak fiscal year on the horizon.

In a briefing to the City Council that will be presented today, City Manager Mary Suhm calculates that — in the best possible outcome — the city will be $41 million in the hole as it seeks to balance revenues and expenditures in 2011-12.

The worry is that, in addressing its $17 billion to $25 billion deficit, the state will pass more costs along to cities — something Dallas can ill afford.

In September, the council voted 8-7 to raise the tax rate, nearly the maximum allowed by law, to help close a deficit that swelled to nearly $200 million in early 2010.
