> First, all of my daughters were taught these PLUS Ma’am and Sir - ALWAYS!

Excellent rule that I fully support.
Also, if any child of mine ever addressed an adult by their first name, they knew they’d be in trouble.
Adults are always addressed as Mr. {Brown} or Mrs. {Jones} or occasionally if the adult is a close family friend Miss {Ann} or Mr. {Jim} or Mrs. {Gail} is acceptable.

A new couple moved into our sub-division and they are in their late-30's. Sarah, my youngest, helps some of the seniors do yard work and things in the neighborhood. The new couple asked for some suggested help and Sarah was recommended. We went down to meet them. Sarah used her usual ma'am and sir and they stated that she would have to call them by their first names. The next day she started calling them Mr. Bob and Ms. Kate. They asked her to stop and she told them that at the least, she had to call them by these regards or I would not be a happy camper.

I remember when I got out of the Marine Corps, I went to work for a lady in her early-40's and I always said, "Yes/No Ma'am." She told me that I had to stop doing this. I told her that I really couldn't. She asked if it was because of my Marine Corps training and I said, "No, it was because of my Grandmother's training!" She said, since it was for my grandmother, then she would learn to live with it!
