Kerning is a computer process that allows certain letter combinations to "invade" each other's space for the purpose of readability and economy of space.

Yes, I noticed this on his short form COLB. Not only did it use kerning, but the type font looked oddly modern for the time. But the fact that the letters were not fixed space was odd for a document that was supposed to have been created before the advent of computer typesetting.

The short form COLB was never claimed to be an original document from 1961. It was purported to be the standard computer printout offered by the State of Hawaii in response to a request for a birth certificate based on their database. The stamped date indicates that it was generated in 2007.
