I think the thrust of the put-down was based in the notion that "white" is a symbol of "purity" (hence the fact that in bygone days the bride wore white as a symbol of her sexual purity/ chastity). Since both the bride and groom are notorious tramps, she was probably being snarky about the incongruity of a white wedding.... at least that's how I interpreted "a wedding night that is, famously, old news for the couple."

A legitimate criticism, actually...

The "white wedding" is an historical novelty, which became THE vogue, when then Queen Victoria got married in a white dress; ditto the use of orange blossoms as a traditional wedding flower, which Queen Victoria also used.

In Royal European weddings, during the Medieval time period, royal and not so royal ( if they could afford special clothes, which most couldn't ) wore blue, as did their attendants,in honor of the Virgin Mary.

“being snarky about the incongruity of a white wedding....”

I’ve been told that in these modern times, white just means that it’s the bride’s first WEDDING.

See, we can rationalize anything!

That is what I thought when I started reading the article, but she ended with that snide remark Brits in T-shirts and jeans gathered for days to catch a glimpse of the white folks riding to Buckingham Palace. That made me realize what she was referring to in the beginning.

If that was her intent then she should have said that. Quite frankly, as they did live together I don’t think any of the costs for the wedding should be on the back of the taxpayer. The queen and the Middletons should have picked up the whole tab. That is where my negative view of the wedding ends. I hope this couple learned enough about each other to have made a wise decision.
Prince Edward and Sophie his wife did this same thing...and so far as I know they have remained out of the tabloids and are happy with their lives and their children. Let’s just wish the same for William and Kate and otherwise leave them alone to begin their new lives.
