Apparently the royal family wanted Charles’ to take a bride who had a more limited ‘dating’ history. Camilla didn’t meet the requirement. Times have changed.

That and the fact that the Spencers are high aristocracy and Camilla's family not quite so much. Besides which, Camilla's great grandmother was King Edward VII's last mistress.
Thank goodness that William wasn't forced to marry someone he didn't know and care for!
