Seattle to pay $1.5 million to slain woodcarver's family

SEATTLE - The city of Seattle has reached a $1.5 million settlement of claims brought by the family of slain woodcarver John T. Williams, who was shot dead by Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk last August.

The settlement was reached after a mediation involving representatives of the John T. Williams estate, Williams’ mother and the city.

The Williams family, which earlier failed in its attempts to get criminal charges filed against Birk, expressed relief that the matter could be resolved early without extended and costly litigation.

"This is one step towards justice, but it is only a step. Nothing can make up for the loss of my brother," said Rick Williams, who is the administrator of the John T. Williams estate.

Under the agreement, $250,000 will go into a trust fund for Williams' mother, Ida Edward. The remaining $1.25 million will be placed into escrow while distribution issues are resolved and approved by the court.

“I usually side with the police, but not in this case.”

Very true. The man he shot wasn’t even facing him.

I remember this.

If memory serves me correctly, some here were actually defending the LEO.

Some here will defend the LEO regardless of what they do.

You post stories about police wrongdoing the way someone used to post about pitbull attacks. I think the mods just get tired of someone banging the same drum all the time no matter how valid the theme.

What are you talking about? Why would they get mad? I'm glad he posted this

Should the truth be hidden and censored?

Should the poster be banned?

Yes, that thread went several hundred posts and you are correct, many Law-And-Order-At-Any-Cost Freepers went to the very end defending this cop who murdered this man.

Should the truth be hidden and censored?

That's what it appears as if "someone" is trying to do here...

I’ll come out and say I hate cops who murder people. I also hate it when they get away with it.

How is posting an article detailing the criminal acts of a cop, such as this one MURDER... “cop hating?”

But see, therein lies the distinction... its okay for cops to murder, but not commoners...

But our law enforcement won’t follow orders of a corrupt govt like the brown shirts of Germany, right?

That was a brutal, bad shoot incident, which there seem to be *many* nowadays. From my observations and experience, many police departments and county sheriff's are totally out of control, treating citizens like the enemy on some foreign battle field with a paramilitary slant and behavior.

For the record, I'm very pro-law enforcement, but GD it, I am no hypocrite like so many others, and unlike them I will state the truth, and tell it like I see it.

Without question, the cop should have been criminally prosecuted here.

It gets moved there by the Mods because they don’t want this type of news getting much exposure.

See my earlier post regarding some of the other stuff they like to do when I post a thread like this one.

That's seems a little disturbing. What's the motive there?

As best as I can tell, they would prefer this type of news not be posted on FR, must not fit well in with their “conservative agenda”...

They’re all for outing .gov crimes and corruption, but just not crimes and corruption committed by the police.

I was responding to your post #15, which leads me to believe you post many stories about police problems, not to your post about this specific incident.
