The idea of a draft is pretty much incomprehensible to the current generation of Americans. I was in the Army up until a few years ago, and I can't imagine what having draftees around would have been like. The Army today is a distinct, insular culture that is pretty much separate from others in your age group. Non-veterans just don't have a frame of reference for what service means.

If you played 'Restrepo' at your local high school, then told the kids that they'd be given lottery tickets, and whoever 'won' got sent to that, you'd see America pulled out of Afghanistan so fast you'd wonder if we were ever there.

Perhaps older Americans remember a time when that wasn't the case. I wouldn't know. I'm just saying that for today, I'm guessing this story won't have the legs it would have 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

I believe that one of the goals of getting rid of DADT, is to end of all-voluntary military, and ultimately bring back the draft, in a military that is more socially liberal, in other words, it will become just another social program.

They know getting rid of DADT will discourage patriots from signing up, and many currently serving will leave the first chance they get.
