Technically TMI melted through a bottom seal of a control rod assembly box. It just did not have enough momentum to roll through those assemblies and break out of the box. The seals around the numerous control rod assembly boxes are the weak spots. They are stainless steel welds, if memory serves me right. That type of breakout is a potential explanation for Reactor #2 which had an internal explosion within its lower sections. That reactor right now has 35 % of it rods exposed to air.

I guess if we see them starting to dump truckloads of sand onto a reactor we will know the jig is up ?

I was wondering about TMI. Thanks for the overview - I needed it as I mulled this situation this evening. I can’t picture the region you are referring to - nor the seals. I think I need to do some reading on TMI.
