They are the same. Aspartame is (iirc) 51% phenylalanine, 39% aspartic acid and 10% methanol. You get many times more of these three from the foods you eat every day than you do from a can of Diet Coke. It's a good question to ask why they're bad for you when consumed in aspartame but not when consumed in food. I've yet to hear a good answer.

Consuming too much of anything can be bad for you. People die from drinking too much water. As with everything, moderation is the key.
