"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

If this is NPR trying to get into the right’s good graces, it’s not going to work.
We know that NPR is merely Air America with taxpayer dollars.

This is nothing of the sort. This is a very long-running program hosted by a legend in the radio world, Mr. Ed Walker.
This may be the one piece of Americana present on public radio. I do not hold the rest of their programming against Mr. Ed—no way.

Yes, all is well here—no news is good news.
Are you back home after being away on business? Were you in the Big Apple or another part of NY?

Good.
Yes back home. Was in lower Manhattan. It's inspiring to walk around the stock exchange, the tops of those skyscrapers hidden by fog or low clouds, on the way into work. I was there 3 days and the NY state and NYC tax on my hotel room was $120.

So has CPB/NPR...if this individual is good enough it would survive in the private market.
No more public dollars for liberal radio!

Wowee! I wouldn’t live in New York if someone paid me to!
I got an email today with photographs of the 1930 constuction of the Empire State Building. Just looking at those pictures made me dizzy with the height of them, not to mention the scaryness of no rails or anything to “protect” the workers!

No more public dollars for liberal radio! No argument there.
Meanwhile, until NPR is defunded, it's nice to see that there is some local NPR programming that doesn't promote a political agenda, and this is one.
These are Old Time Radio broadcasts from the !930's to 1960s hosted weekly on Sunday nights by Ed Walker on WAMU, Washington DC. Ed is somewhat of a legend himself in Old Time Radio, as a member of the Joy Boys comedy team. Here is a sample of the group's work: "Round Table of Knowledge - Pumpkin".

YIKES! Seeing that makes me shudder with fear. A very, very special group of men. I read a few times that some members of a particular Indian tribe were really good at that height work. A northern tribe, wish I could remember. Just seemed to have good heads for heights, I guess.

Stanley Jones (Conroy) ; Writer/Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Dan Cubberly ; CBS; Expense Account Total = $20.00 ; Two beautiful girls - one of them a sweetheart, and one of them a killer. Betty Lewis calls to say she is home from her month long vacation to the Poconos, Atlantic City and New York, and she wants to know when he is going to ask her to marry him. They make a date for the evening. Then Lieutenant Randy Singer calls and asks for Johnny to come to NYC to help him. Johnny submits his expense account to Pat McCracken at the Universal Adjustment Bureau. Dollar goes to the 18th Precinct and Randy tells him about the apparent "suicide" by sleeping pills death of four men: Don R. Lee Brownfield ($40,000 insurance), Franklin P. Dollars fire escape window has been jimmied open - just like the lock on her mailbox - and his desk rifled. In the mud around her mailbox was high heel foot prints - has somebody been using her mailbox while she was away. Johnny hangs around Betty's mailbox. A package was delivered. Matt starts his investigation at the Texas Trail because he heard that Billy was there the previous night. Kitty is upset over the lynching of "such a nice kid". Hank Ashford, a cook at the Long Branch, is the one who accused Billy of the murder of Jobe. He rooms in #310 of the fancy Dodge House. Hank had taken Billy's gun when the lynch party grabbed him. Matt goes to Hank's room and discovers that Billy's gun is clean and fully loaded. Matt hauls Hank to the jail. Cam comes looking to bail out Hank, but Matt says that Hank is not under arrest. The Kilcourse residence is at 1316 Clarendon. Sam follows Leonard to Marin County and Ernie Nogales' Racket Club, a gambling joint. Kilcourse buys $100,000 in chips, and proceeds to bet $25,000 per spin of the roulette wheel. It looked to Spade as if Kilcourse was trying to lose the money. Sam goes to Mrs. Kilcourse's apartment where he first meets Lorraine's brother Tommy Lane. Sam initially threatens to quit. Lorraine says that Leonard is paying off Nogales to keep him from going after her brother, who ratted on Nogales for a rigged roulette wheel in Vegas. However, actually it was Lorraine who ratted on Nogales. Sam agrees to go back and see if he can figure how the wheel is rigged. Sam wins big - $100,000. Nogales looks happy. In the parking lot Sam sees five suspicious-looking cigar smoking characters waiting in a car. He releases the brake on Lorraine Kilcourse's Plymouth, which is soon riddled with machine gun fire from the car with the suspicious-looking characters. Spade busts into Nogales' office with his heater drawn. Evidently, Spade was mistaken for Tommy Lane and the money he just won was marked money from a payroll job. Spade hands the money over to Leonard Kilcourse. Sam recognized that Lorraine was not Kilcourse's wife. (29:32)
