“McCarthy went too far in accusing Eisenhower, though.”

Actually McCarthy was remarkably loyal to Eisenhower even though Eisenhower was undermining Senator McCarthy and working to destroy him. McCarthy had information about Communists in the atomic bomb program but did not go public with this knowledge in deference to a request from Eisenhower.

Robert Welch, in his book The Politician, accused Eisenhower of being a communist sympathizer.
