Some of those coins, depending on dates and condition, may be worth more as collectibles than for the silver value. IF your family was considering selling them, be sure to have a reputable coin dealer check them, before just selling based on the silver market prices.
Absolutely, how are you going to buy a loaf of bread with gold? The gold size would have to be microscopic.
In his book "Patriots" John Wesley Rawles, in describing what conceivably could happen after a total currency collapse, has people doing what they have always done, i.e., form trading markets. And the currency is silver coins. Gold is much too valuable to be used for that purpose.
“On a side note, now is an excellent time to clean out the garage and take as much scrap steel to the dump as you can haul, because the price on scrap aint too shabby these days either...Of course that means our light poles, metal bridge pieces and guard rails will be disappearing again soon as well....”

That is what saved a lot of people through the last Depression. We managed to survive off the land. That is why it was a good thing to have.

The all time high was 50, right?
Hmmm.... Silver, and Gold is just there to preserve your buying power and not to make money.
I see, back when the Hunt brothers were the players. I’m surpised you held on to it this long - may not be too much longer before you break even. :-)
