We’re at the DVR stage now. I DVR old movies off TCM, and one-in-awhile a Western off the Westerns Channel. As for prime time, all we watch is NCIS, sometimes Criminal Intent, and Extreme Makeover and DWTS (those are my wife’s; not me...).

Other than that, it’s golf when there’s something interesting going on (like the Masters or the Tournament Players Championship coming up), or baseball, but not very often at all. In season, its also football.

So, I guess the question I have is about the ‘Free’ channels. What’s with that? The Netflix/Movie issue isn’t a big one with me, I doubt but a fraction would interest us. So it’s basically TV fare.

If TV is more your bag, you might want to go to this link and check out the offerings there for the Roku. Also, you might want to look into Hulu Plus (available on the Roku standard channel lineup) however it does, like Netflix, carry a monthly fee.

It is important to note that the listed channels on the Roku box are not your only options. There are a lot of "private" channels (like the one I linked to) that allow you to bring content to your TV through the Roku. For example, you could send YouTube to the Roku through private channels.

I haven't had too much time to fuss around with the nuts and bolts but I am told that with a little time investment, you can pretty much get anything that is available on basic cable over the Internet instead, allowing you to truly cut the cord with your cable company (though you will still need an internet connection). The only reason I haven't cut my basic cable yet is because I also bundle my phone and internet through Verizon and cutting the basic cable will only make those services go up.
