My theory is that the aliens saw Leonardo Dicaprio in the movie, decided to go back in time to sink the Titanic to make sure the timeline is preserved and kidnapped Dicaprio just as he sank under water so they could use him for anal probing.

Also, I saw the movie. None of the passengers had the ability to think about anything but themselves—it was like an Ocean Liner full of Obama’s. So there was just no time for them to even consider unimportant stuff like lasers.
